That stinks!!

Posted Thursday, December 3, 2009, at 3:11 PM

Working retail stinks!! Literally!! I debated about doing this but after a recent run on cigarettes and go phone minutes,(surprisingly at the first of the month), I just HAD to! If you can afford cigs and phone cards surely you can buy soap!!

I had the unfortunate privilige of working for a major retail establishment for almost 2 years. Not unfortunate in working there but to be present when the people who find the above mentioned "necessities" more important than personal hygiene happened to meander through. Dragging a cloud of funk with them that would gag a skunk! It would settle over the whole department like a thick blanket just suffocating you! And there is no getting away!! It clings to your clothes and skin with the tenacity of napalm!!

I met many of these truly nice people during my stint there and this does not speak as an indictment of them as human beings. I just had to speak up and didn't really have the guts to say it to their faces.

I mean how do you politely tell someone that your odor has just brought a small amount of bile up into the back of my throat?!? So please for the sake of those who have to stand within stink bomb range of you. If you haven't bathed in over a week, this is for you! PLEASE!!! for the love of noses and all that is healthy, TAKE A SHOWER!!! Or bath, really any form of those that includes you have bodily contact with soap and water at the same time!!!

Thank you in advance. Oh! And you may need to burn those clothes too!!

During my first year or so of college I worked at Barnes and Noble and I must say that I whole-heartedly agree with you on this. The sad thing is that most of these people have no idea just how bad they smell. I still think that telling someone they smell might be a good way to lose one's own job though.

Good stuff, Roy!

Hahahaha! I love this blog!!!

Actually, that kind of person makes all sorts of strange choices. I have a friend who watched someone decide to buy the movie "Titanic," rather than toilet paper... She borrowed a roll from another shopper. You have to wonder about their judgment.

I was almost asphyxiated recently when a woman came in my office REEKING of cigarette smoke. Really, I coughed for 15 minutes after she left! Had to open the windows to air the office out -- and it was COLD!!

Great Scott! A few smelly customers in a supermarket? Hardly a problem I would have thought. How about a dentist coping with a dogbreath client or a medical practitioner conducting prostate examinations?

Sorry there Roy I guess I will shower tonight..even though it is not the end of the month yet.

Roy, this was a good topic, & I enjoyed the stinky discussion! I hope you come up with more!!

Hey --- I just realized: Wartz is a New Zealander (really, he is!). Maybe he's used to smelly people in the supermarket!!?? I mean, how would we know what it's like down there? In the movies, Australians look as if they haven't had a bath in a couple of years!!

-- Posted by goat lady on Fri, Dec 11, 2009, at 8:05 AM

Now now goatlady!! First thank you for the positive encouragement, I hope I write stuff you can enjoy and identify with. Second calling a NZ'er Australian is fighting words. I learned that the hard way!

I hope I haven't struck a never with you wartz!! I mean if you have an aversion to water or soap this is not an indictment of you as a person. I am sure you are a very nice person (however you smell).

Just kidding!! I am not a doctor or a dentist so I can't write about that. But I'll bet they have some good stories!!

I hope to write more that you will like but leaving the employment of this retailer has calmed me down quite a bit. I rant less but I do still rant. Give me time hopefully you will enjoy the next installment and it won't take so long.

OH!! and redbirdfan74, don't forget to use soap too!! LOTS OF SOAP!!

Roy 3 and GL

1. I do not smell and I am well aware of the purpose of soap when combined with water.

2. I am not offended by the error made in linking Australians with NZers. After all, we often mistakenly identify Canadians as Americans where the only difference seems to be that the Canadians are marginally more raucous.

3. I am disappointed, however, that the comments seem to be personal - save it for Hoon, his skin is thicker.

4. By the way, welcome back Hoon. Some of these blogs badly need a right wing emphasis.

I am sorry wartz! I did not intend the comments to seem as though I was offended. I was not in the least. I welcome all comments good and bad.

I was trying to have a little fun (albeit at your expense). I am still learning my way around blogsphere and need to learn how to use punctuation to convey the proper emotion or intent.

I am, however, confused about the right wing comment??? If I leaned anymore right I would be horizontal!!

Oh! and Canadians also say "eh" after every phrase. And when they say out or about it sounds more like oot and aboot. I only know because I grew up an hour from the Canadian border.

I do hope you will enjoy my future writing though and I will try to keep leaning for you.

Oops, wartz, I hope I didn't offend you -- I was just teasing! You know - Crocodile Dundee is as far as most of us get in thinking of Australians -- and New Zealand is right down there next to Australia -- and Peter Jackson doesn't like to wear shoes...

Didn't realize that Canadians were raucous. I notice that Germans are, though.

Enough is more than enough. Roy, save us and come up with another topic - this one is far too messy and I do not want to get into a slanging match with GL. She has been most accommodating and forgiving of my poor command of the language in the past.

I'm trying I'm trying!! But this was a fun diversion anyway! Thanks for the welcome!! I hope to have a new rant soon. I have been ranting a lot but it is the same old topics that have been beaten to death already. Give me a bit, a good rant is never far away!!

GL; Interesting that you mention Peter Jackson. In today's newspaper there is an item concerning the NZ premiere of his latest film, "The Lovely Bones". Included are 'photos of the red carpet of course and featured is the lovely Susan Sarandon, dressed to kill and looking as fabulous as ever. Then we have the NZer, Peter Jackson, scruffy hair, mis-shapen jacket, mis-matched shirt, no tie, well worn jeans which are too long in the leg and finished off with hiking boots.

You are quite entitled to express the view that we are a filthy, scruffy, disrespectful lot if Jackson is representative of us. Fortunately, he is not !

-- Posted by wartz on Tue, Dec 15, 2009, at 1:40 AM

Hahaha! I figured that would get a rise out of you, Wartz! I read that during the filming of The Lord of the Rings, Jackson usually went barefoot!

However, since his directing was so brilliant, I really wouldn't care how scruffy he looked! I think he's positively brilliant!

I haven't seen "The Lovely Bones." I thought he was going to do "The Hobbit," but if he did, I don't know what happened to it.

-- Posted by goat lady on Sat, Dec 19, 2009, at 8:41 PM

There is egg on my face over this one. I have just read that Susan Sarandon showed up bare footed and allegedly sans underwear although obviously I am not in a position to confirm this !

-- Posted by wartz on Sun, Dec 20, 2009, at 1:49 AM

Susan Sarandon was dressed fit to kill but wearing no shoes or underwear??? She must have thought, like the rest of us, that such attire (or lack of it) was the mode of dress expected in NZ! Hahaha!

Roy Kunkle, get off your duff and write another blog!!! We need you! You surely haven't run out of steam this soon!!!

ROY!! Yoohoo!

-- Posted by goat lady on Wed, Jan 27, 2010, at 6:01 PM

Sorry no I haven't run out of steam but since I quit my second job I just don't seem to rant as much. I do have a new one in the works and I hope you will enjoy it!

Revelation 3:14-19 If you were to read these verses you would find the foundation for this blog and have an understanding of the essence of me. I am a Christian! I am not ashamed or embarrassed to be so, nor will my obvious faults keep me from proclaiming the Gospel of Jesus Christ! Every "rant" in this blog will have this fact at it's base. This in no way should be taken as me believing that I am right all the time. May I always be ready to accept the lessons that come only from being wrong! However I will be either hot or cold! May the Lord Jesus not find me to be lukewarm.
