Council governs yard sale signs

Posted Wednesday, October 14, 2009, at 10:39 AM

At the request of the Missouri Department of Transportation at Monday night's meeting of the Bloomfield Board of Aldermen, the board passed an ordinance that would govern the placement of yard sale signs.

Following a recent decision by MoDOT to no longer allow them on their signs, the city decided to no longer allow them on city signs as well.

Technically, the ordinance prohibits the placing of signs on MoDOT owned signs, City of Bloomfield owned signs and utility poles.

It does, however, still allow for signs to be on right of ways and along roads as long as it is on its own post.

It also requires that all signs be removed within 24 hours of the yard sale.

This insane ordinance should be immediately repealed. Bloomfield has existed for 150 years without navel gazing busy bodies creating this nonsensical ordinance. Can we next expect an ordinance regulating flatulence discharges on city property? Now that can be offensive!! Yard Sale Signs on a utility pole helps both the people who have things to sell and those who want to buy them.

You said it, FJGuy! I suppose this foolishness will extend to Advance, Dexter, and all the other communities in Missouri. As if we don't have enough rules regulating our pitiful lives, the least they can do is leave our yard sales alone!!

I understand all of your comments. Did you stop to think how people abuse the privilege of putting up the signs and don't remove them after their sale. They leave nails, etc. in the poles, the men who climb the poles get hurt?

If they would just take down the signs, everything would have been o.k. and the privilege probably wouldn't have been taken away and you might not drive by for the sale and it was a month or so ago. The streets and roads might not be so gludered (sp). Just a thought

Just think the persons who voted on this subject is the "Alderman" who were voted in by the citizens of Bloomfield. So, do these men need to be voted out of Office?

Now there should be a lively business in yard sale sign posts!

I'll take two!
