Upcoming events in Advance
As the rain pours down, dampening a little of our enthusiasm for Fall, several events are being planned in October for the Advance community. This information will be updated as we find out more.
Thanks to Corey for undertaking this new website program. Our prayer is for it to prosper. We also pray for the rain to STOP, so that Bloomfield can have a good fall festival!
* Oct. 17, Saturday - Ginger Hewitt, owner of G's Gifts & Ice Cream Parlor, is having a Fall Pumpkin Fest at her shop on the corner of Sturdivant and Ash Street in the old downtown Advance across from the old park. This will be the first year for this festival, so she says it's starting out small, with crafters, music, pumpkin spitting contests, pumpkin-chunking contests and other games for the kids. Ginger has renovated the old Advance Bank, which was built around 1904. Go inside and see the old vault!
* Advance Wise Buys, our new antique store on Sturdivant Street just down from G's, opened on Oct. 5. The antique showrooms and the piano studio are just beautiful. Owners Brenda and Wayne Voss are joined by her brother, who has been in the antique business in St. Louis for years. The Voss's daughter Vickie, who runs the studio, has been a piano repair technician for 25 years. You must go see the antique piano in the window! The store is open on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Saturday.
* Oct. 31, Saturday, is Halloween. The United Methodist Women are having a Fall Bazaar on Friday, Oct. 30, 3-6 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 31, 7 a.m.- 5 p.m., Nov. 1, 12:30 p.m.- 4 p.m. Soup, baked goods, handmade aprons & crafts, knick knacks, jewelry, candles, gift boxes, cool junque. The church is located on Whitwell Street, which runs between the church and the old gym. Turn on Sturdivant Street and look right. It's the church with the dome.
* Oct. 31, Saturday, 9 a.m. - 3 p.m. - Advance Community Library Book and yard sale - outside on the old tennis court beside the library - Highway C beside the old gym.
* Oct. 31, Saturday night (don't know times yet) - Word is that Bethel Gen. Baptist church will be having its third annual big Halloween event for the kiddies; however, they have been unable to get the old VFW building this year, so they'll have to pitch a tent out at their church, which is six miles west of Advance. That's bound to put a damper on an event which has been HUGE when held at the VFW building. The games, food, costume contests, and other events have attracted as many as 250 children from around the area. It has definitely been a community - rather than simply a church - event.
* Oct. 31, Saturday night - City Hall will be open to hand out candy to trick or treaters. The trick or treating curfew in Advance is 9 p.m. Folks should turn off their porch lights at that time.
More items will be added as they become known.
