August moments in AdvancePosted Saturday, August 13, 2011, at 4:57 PM
I looked for a beautiful photo I took of the crepe myrtle across the street from the NSC office, but I can't find it--so I'm posting a photo of the old Greenbriar Cemetery out west of town. Paul Corbin and I recently went out there to find Civil War graves. It's a beautiful, peaceful spot up on a rugged hill. Paul says that 8 of the 29 victims of the Mingo Swamp Massacre are buried there in a mass grave. There is a lovely sign commemorating this dastardly event.
August is supposed to be hot, but I'm hoping that it's not as hot as June and July have been!
If we can hang on, here are the events expected to happen this month.
Aug. 4.....Advance Senior Center board meeting, 6 p.m.
Aug. 5.....Senior center meal--11:30 to 12. Drawing at noon. Come later at your own risk, as the food may be gone!
Aug. 2.....7 p.m. meeting in the library for board members. Wear light clothes, as we keep the air on low. I hope the new library shirts are done!
Aug. 11....7 p.m. School Board meeting in Mr. Seiler's office. Dress warmly.
Aug. 15....6 p.m. This is the regularly-scheduled time for an Advance Board of Aldermen meeting at City Hall. That doesn't mean they'll have it for sure, but there's a 50/50 chance they will.
Aug. 25....6 p.m. Yep, the Advance board of Aldermen is Thursday at 6 m.m.
Every Friday at 11:30 we have a meal at the Senior Center on the corner of Highway C and Poplar Street. You will see the sign, provided that our Knock Out roses haven't covered it up. They are doing quite well. The cost of the meal has recently been raised to $4.00 for everyone, no matter the age. Homemade desserts are out of this world!
Aug. 29....Usual night for Stoddard County Historical Society meeting. I haven't heard if they're meeting this month.
I am sorry if you find this message board a bit flippant this month, but I am feeling a bit unruly, and I have the distinct feeling that no one reads it, so I feel that I may say what I please. If this is not the case, you'd better tell me now--before my disrespectful attitude gets me fired.... Madeline
