Introductions
This is an informal introduction of myself to you, who I hope will become a consistent reader of my column in the years ahead. Many of you either know me as I am now or sometime in the past in my youth or middle age. I am looking forward to gaining lots of new friends through these writings.
I am Kathleen Dover (Grubbs). I am a lifelong resident of Dexter other than a few years I lived in St. Charles and Bbirmingham, Alabama.
The forthcoming columns will involve the telling of something that has happened to me or those around me, or something that I feel or believe. Some entries will be funny to make you laugh with me, or you might even laugh at me. Either way, it's okay.
Some submissions will hopefully will let you think about things in your life, or help you see blessings in your life. Some will be spiritual in nature, not forceful, just something that may help you know that you are not here alone. Some will be tributes to the heros and heroines who have touched my life. One of those people could be you. Whatever the subject, my hope is that you will find whatever you may need for that particular moment as you read my column.
I have been trying to come up with names for my column. Since I am known by several names it has not been easy. Of course, I am Kathleen to most of my family and friends. Some have called me Kathy, but to my sister and nieces and nephews I am known as Dida or aunt Dida. That is because my sister, Linda, could not say "sister" when she was learning to talk so it came out as "Dida." Don't ask me how you get Dida out of sister. One of the children in my mother's care when I was a teenager thought she was saying "dead eye", therefore, that was her name for me.
Then of course I became "mom." I still look around when I am in public and I hear someone calling for mom. I have even been known to answer when I hear "mom." The children that grew up with my children and spent most of their time at our home called me "mom" and still do. I count tht as a tribute. then I became "mema" to my grandchildren. What a special name to be called. Now I am known as "mema" by a little girl that is my great-granddaughter! How wonderful. After reading my articles, some of you may even come up with a name for me!! Hopefully they will also be good and easy on my ear.
Finally. I have decided on a name for my column. It will be called "Kathleen's Korner." When you are looking through the Daily Statesman on the first and third Sundays of the month, join me for a couple minutes. I'll be somewhere in a "Korner."
