A special heroine
You know after three years of reading my ramblings that I do a lot of reminiscing of the 'olden' years that I call the true 'golden years'. Those days were much slower and in a child's mind, too slow. Those are the days I find myself often yearning for.
Those were the days we found fun in sidewalk skating, jumping rope, making shoes from tin cans and walking miles in them. We'd play hopscotch, Annie, Annie over, hide and seek, and maybe sneak in a childish kiss while we were hiding. Remember spin the bottle for another childhood kiss? Then there was stick ball and Red Rover, Red Rover. The simple games of those long ago days go on and on. I dare say you can come up with lots more. They were such fun and exciting games, but the youth of today would laugh at them and call them boring.
Then there were trees in our yards to climb, and memory brings a special person to mind. She was already up in the tree and I was wanting to play with her, so she reached down and pulled me up in the tree with her. I couldn't have been much older than four or five and she about nine or ten. Our family lived just down the road from her family. Being so young, I don't remember much about that particular time.
Both our families moved and took different directions. I don't know how much later after those country days it was, but the next time our lives intertwined was when her sister married my cousin. Again, I wasn't very old, but I remember them getting married very vividly.
Even with being 'almost kin', we didn't see much of each other through the years. The next stage of our lives we were grown and again our families lived 'just across the tracks' from each other. By this time we both had children. Two of her boys and my two girls were the same ages and my mother baby sat all four of them. Isn't it neat how some people's' lives just seem to keep connecting in so many different ways?
We both worked in our different fields and never really spent any time together, but somehow our lives just kept connecting. Our children went to school together and were friends, and like their mothers, don't see each other often, but still friends. Her oldest son and my youngest daughter were even married for a brief time.
As the years went by, I watched as she became one of our leading business women. She developed a successful restaurant business for many years. My life took me out of state for several years and for the most part I lost track of not only her, but many others as well.
After I returned to my hometown, again our lives joined as she had created a successful business downtown and I started up a small business one street over. Since that time I opened a small business on the opposite end of the street where hers is located. Along with her business, you will find her active in civic activities to better our town.
Seems we just can't be separated. Some elements of our personal lives has even been similar. Both our husbands became very ill and I think some of their illnesses have been the same.
Because of our hectic lifestyles, even though we work 'down the street' from each other, we rarely get to visit. Her sister is still my cousin by marriage so we still have family ties.
Perhaps when our lives slow down we can find the time to relax and enjoy some time together. After all, our lives go back further for me than anyone else in my life.
Most of you know her, but let me introduce to you my heroin for this week's column. She's none other than Peggy Barks. Peggy, you are an inspiration and I love you dearly.
See ya next time somewhere in a 'korner'. Remember you never know when you may show up as my hero or heroin.
