Wishing Away!
Have you ever found yourself full of "I Wishes"? I never really thought of them in those words before, until one morning recently. It seemed on this particular morning that if it could go wrong - it did. Oh, nothing big or tragic, just little life annoyances that start your day out wrong, or worse, if you let them, ruin your entire day.
I had been fighting the flu bug, or as I call it, my "February-itis," for a couple of weeks. Knowing I absolutely have no time for that stinking little bug, I took some of the good-ole over-the-counter Nyquil. I knew it would make me drowsy, which is why I made the decision to take it about midnight. I have a bad case of insomnia, so by taking it at the midnight hour, I was hoping it would get me through the 3 a.m. hour, which is the worst time for me to wake up. Since I do what I call cat nap all night, when I awake at 3 a.m. I have a tendency to stay awake until it becomes time for me to get up. That my friends, makes for a very long day. With that being said, my "I wishes" started.
I didn't realize how many "I wishes" I had made until I got to work and said out loud (to myself of course), "I sure wish all this snow and ice would go away." After hearing myself, I got tickled and again - out loud - said, "I sure have been full of "I wishes" this morning," I then started thinking about all of the ones I had said from the time I got up. (Which were all said out loud). It went something like this:
I wish I had taken that Nyquil about an hour earlier so I wouldn't be so drowsy this morning. "I wish I could stay in bed longer." "I wish my hair color didn't fade so quickly." "I sure wish this kitchen was self cleaning." "I wish my car was clean." "I sure do wish these wrinkles would slow down." "I wish I had a chauffeur to whisk me off to work this morning."
Okay, I know you are thinking or saying there is no way she could be wishing all that. Oh yes I was, and there were even more. Some are best not shared in this column.
Getting myself settled in at work, I started thinking about Mom, who was well known by Dad and her children for talking to herself. She once told me she was the only one who would listen to her talk. You ladies know they say that after a time we become our mothers. If that is true, I will never lack for someone to talk with and you know how I do love to talk!
Thinking about all the wishes I had made in one day, I began to think about wishes. I told myself, "Instead of wishing for all these things you should be praying about them." Then I thought again, there is no need to bother God about all these silly little wishes of mine. After all, He does say in Proverbs 16:31 that "The hoary head (frost colored or gray) is a crown of shining glory, if it be found in the way of righteousness." So, what if my hair color fades? Underneath I have a crown of glory. Wishing my car clean? Get real. Go clean it. A self-cleaning kitchen? It already is....it's called clean it yourself. Eleanor Roosevelt said it best when she said, "It takes as much energy to wish as it does to plan." So I need to spend more time planning to get these things done instead of wishing them done. The one quote I have always liked is, "The only difference between a wish and a prayer is that you're at the mercy of the universe for the first, and you've got some help with the second."
Well, so much for wishing. I best be saying "see ya next time somewhere in a korner." After all, I don't want to get caught wasting my wishes on wishing.
