How many apples does it take to make a banana split?
1. What fruit is best at gymnastics?
2. What fruit always gets married in church?
3. How do you make ice cream?
4. How many apples does it take to make a banana split?
5. What fruit can be used to make hay?
Logan, nine years old, and I, much older, made up these jokes this week during campmeeting. Our family had a room in a cabin at Pinecrest. The kids love it. So do I.
The morning bible study covered the life of Elijah from the Brook Kerith to Zarepath to Mount Carmel.
One year at Kerith and at Zarepath two
Before your Mount Carmel GOD prepares you
That little rhyme above is what I got from the study. Kerith was called the Cutting Place, Zarepath the Refining Place, and Mount Carmel was the Fertile Place.
1. What fruit is best at gymnastics? Bananas, they do splits.
It is not unusual for me to hear two sermons at once. The one being preached and the one in my head. As we journeyed to the brook where ravens fed Elijah to Zarepath's bread and water there was much focus on what lay ahead at Mount Carmel. But in my head...
It was at the Brook Kerith where Elijah developed an intimacy with GOD and at Zarepath intimacy with others. It took years to develop intimacy, Mount Carmel was one day.
2. What fruit always gets married in church? Cantaloupe (can't elope)
The Summer Olympics begin in a few weeks. Athletes have been preparing for years. Some events are over in less than a minute. Most are over in less than a day. Years of preparation for a moment of glory. And then what?
The very best get their picture on a box of Wheaties. Those with a "story" or have a uniqueness about them get television time and wrote about. But most of these athletes arrive in anonimity and return home likewise. They have no medals. Did they fail?
3. How do you make ice cream? Scare me, I scream.
That day of "Olympic victory" for Elijah he did not compete alone. Far from the glare of television cameras and the buzz of reporters prayer was being lifted up for a dearly loved friend in a place called Zarepath by two unnamed people, a widow and her son. And beyond Zarepath, "seeds", morsels of truth planted in the heart of a prophet by nameless birds begin to bear fruit abundantly on Carmel's mount.
Do not measure your life by great moments. If you have an intimacy with GOD and others you cannot fail. Love never fails.
4. How many apples does it take to make a banana split? One, bananas don't like apples.
Very few in the kingdom of GOD ever make the spotlight in this world. None make the spotlight without the prayers and "seeds" of countless nameless people (unknown in this world, well-known in heaven).
But away from the light are people living in darkness, captives, wounded, hurting, crying. There is no glory to walking here, no one will see, no one will care, except Jesus.
5. What fruit can be used to make hay? Straw..berries
.....peace.....
