I Want My Mother
He wanted his mother. Dad was okay, but he wanted his mother. She had been gone. Now she was home. He wanted her.
It had been a busy few days. The business trip had gone well. She was glad to be home. It always took a couple of days to get back in sync with the household. The animals as well as the human inhabitants each needed time to catch up, to cuddle, and just to hang out. She had spent time with everyone, but some had more needs than others.
Walking through the house to the kitchen she was planning supper. Thinking about what was available to fix quickly, she walked through the living area.
He wanted his mother. Sure, dad was petting him, but mom . . . well she was mom. He wanted her to hold him . . . and admire his soft fur . . . and whisper sweet words . . . he wanted mom. She was walking through the room. Maybe she would sit with them and love him for a while. No, she was still walking . . . talking to dad. He wanted her . . . NOW.
Without thought, he leapt from dad's arms, using him as a springboard. He flew through the air, across the table, stretching forward . . . willing himself to reach his mother. He landed hard and stuck the landing! He had his mother, landing on her shoulders--all without claws to hold himself in place. Yes! Rubbing his jaw against her, he purred his delight.
Walking through the room, she caught a blur of movement with her peripheral vision. Suddenly, the kitten was flying through the air and landed on her shoulder. Shocked, she turned too fast and hit her other shoulder on the bookcase. Pain scorched its ways through the shoulder and down the arm. She doubled in pain, unable to catch her breath. The kitten, like an acrobat managed to balance on her other shoulder, rubbing his jaw against hers, and purring his delight at being with her.
Tears streaked her face. Her husband and son ran to rescue her. Hovering over her, they bombarded her with questions as they tried to see where she was hurt. Reaching for the kitten, he evaded them burrowing into her neck.
Holding her good hand up, she motioned for them to back off. Once she could catch her breath again, she reached up to the kitten. He had placed his paws around her neck and nuzzled into her jaw. He had not intended to hurt her . . . he simple wanted his mother. Though his action was reckless, his desire for her love was overwhelming.
She knew how he felt. There were days when her desire to be held by her mother, her father, or her sisters was overwhelming. If she could only catch a glimpse of them, she too would leap into their arms to be held, loved, and cherished--but they were no longer on this earth.
Sometimes, we feel so far from those we love. We crave their touch, their acceptance, their love. The need is so real, yet just out of our reach. God craves our love that much . . . and more.
God's love has no bounds . . . no beginnings . . . no ends. God's love is pure and complete. God craves for us to accept God's love with a tenacity that never quits looking for a way to find us.
What can separate us from the love of God? "Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God . . .." (Roman 8:38-39) Nothing. God waits and watches for our love. God always loves us . . . even when we don't think through our actions and inadvertently hurt another.
God, we are human and frail. We so easily lose our way and forget you love. So often we act upon impulse and don't think through the consequences. And yet, God, you love us . . . always. Teach us to think before we leap. Teach us to forgive. Teach us to love as you love. So be it. Amen.
