Fix Me
Driving down the highway, he had slowed for traffic as the rain hit. Coming upon a busy intersection, he could see the water gleaming on the roadbed. Taking his foot off the gas pedal he came upon a sheen of water covering the road. The next thing he knew he was spinning out of control.
He tried not to panic as the car spun and went into the grass of the median. Spinning, onto grass he turned and the passenger side slammed into the cable median. All came to a stop--and the rain poured. Making the calls he needed to make, he soon had a tow truck to pull him out of the muck. The auto shop could fix the vehicle. The rest was cosmetic. Relatively speaking--since no one was hurt, it was an easy fix.
They had been on a dead run for weeks. No one had had time to deal with anything--cleaning, cooking, laundry--everything seemed to scream fix me, fix me! Everything had piled up. Taking the time to do one thing still left many others undone.
Even trying to complete one simple task seemed to be overwhelming. Someone at church couldn't do what they had agreed to do--fix me. A rock flew out from a dump truck, striking the windshield--fix me. Mom, I'm hungry--fix me. A fence line broke leaving an open space when a calf could get out--fix me. The printer ran out of ink--fix me. Who drank the last of the milk--fix me Fix me, fix me, fix me seemed to swirl and overwhelm life.
Taking a deep breath, she closed her eyes. Letting her mind return to a sermon she had heard just the week before. Listening again to a short clip a friend had taken during the service she heard the words sung simply, "fix me, Lord, fix me . . . fix me to walk worthy Lord . . . fix me, Lord, fix me . . . oh, oh fix me; oh Lord, fix me . . . fix me Jesus, fix me."
The peace that passes understanding sank into her being . . . her heart. Not everything can be done at once, but with Jesus her soul was at peace. From there things can be fixed.
God when my soul is in turmoil . . . fix me. When all around me screams fix me, teach us to turn to you; to fix our spirits first, to trust you to show the way. Fix me, Lord, fix me. So be it. Amen.
