Hansbrough is averaging 23.4 points and 10.4 rebounds per game this year.
Tyler Hansbrough.....

6 feet 9 inches, 250 pounds of sheer determination! 100% heart!

Everything Tyler does comes from the heart. He loves the game of basketball more than life itself and he refuses to give up until whatever his goal at the time is, is achieved. Currently that goal is winning the NCAA championship with his Tar Heel team. North Carolina has been ranked in the top 5 all this season and have only two losses on their record. A surprising Maryland team beat them outright and a loss to rival Duke without starting point guard Ty Lawson.

Tyler could have entered the NBA draft after his freshman year and again after his sophmore season, but he has his eyes set on that championship. That's another very admirable trait in Tyler. He did not fall under the 'get rich quick' trance that so many young players do these days.

If Hansbrough does come back for his senior campaign, he will be on pace to become North Carolina's all-time scoring leader. He recently passed Michael Jordan to move into 11th place on the all-time list.

Good luck and God bless Tyler!

UPDATE.....

Tyler has now moved up to 6th place on the North Carolina all-time scoring list and CONGRATULATIONS go out as Tyler has been named Sports Illustrated Player of the Year!

There is not another young man I know who is half as motivated as Tyler. He more than deserves everything he gets. When he plays, he not only plays for the City of Poplar Bluff but also for the entire Southeast Missouri Region. Best of Luck to Tyler, championship or not, Southeast Missouri is VERY PROUD of you!!!!

Very well said shoe lady!

I agree 100% about Psycho T.He is an amazing player, with such a work ethic.

I think he is a good one for young people to mold their game on,no matter what sport.

Talent carries you so far,but keeping your eyes on the prize will lead the Tar Heels to March Madness-NCAA all the way.

And no big gawdy tattoos!

It is a shame his brother doesn't have his character. He was driving reckless in Poplar Bluff in 2005 and slammed into a 20 year old girl, spinning her car off in the ditch. Because of who he is, the fact that he said she pulled in front of him (though there were 4 witnesses that said it was actually his fault), the Poplar Bluff Police Department let it disappear. This isn't a rumor either. I have a relative on the department and heard it first hand. He wasn't issued a ticket for excessive speed or C & I. And the girl was never given a dime. I guess character doesn't run in his family, and Tyler just lucked out.

Bobby Greer's response:
I have heard that Tyler and Ben are two totally different people. There is some character in the family though. I had a wonderful conversation with Tyler's maternal grandfather at Hyde's Fish House last winter. He was a very proud, but not flashy, grandparent. He was a real pleasure to talk to.

I do not know any of the rest of the family. I should not have jumped to a conclusion that quick, however you are right about Tyler and Ben being totally different.

Bobby Greer's response:
It's really easy to fly off the handle when you start talking about the majority of younger athletes in today's society! Lot's of thugs!

Tyler has one older brother and a younger one,Ben.I think his Dad has remarried,so I am not sure about step/half siblings I forgot his older brother's name, but I sat next to him at a Mule's game a few years ago. He had some kind of brain injury, but he is into running, and he was in college at the time. He was a real nice guy too.

I don't think a teenager got himself out of trouble but his Dad and granddad are both doctors in PB.If this story is true, and I'm not doubting you,it has less to do with whichever brother you are talking about's "character" and more to do with a wealthy parent, good lawyer and good connections. No parent has any desire to see their teenager in big trouble, you should see how many in Stoddard County hire a lawyer to keep their little Sally the Speeder from losing points on her license,or their Dick the Druggie from doing time-just probation and community service. Parents wield as much as influence as they can to keep their kids out of the pokey. We had a good example last year of two nurses committing a similiar crime, but one got probation and the other was headed to the Graybar Hotel, one had richer parents than the other. Life isn't fair,or about fairness.

If it was,we wouldn't sink to the level of bringing Tyler's brother into a story that has nothing to do with him,for what purpose?

If his entire family turns out to be thugs, killers, dealers, cheaters and kill kittens,it still has nothing to do with how Tyler plays ball or handles himself on or off the court.I think he is the best player Missouri has produced, and I hope time proves me right.

My grandpa has tattoos from WW2,and you can't read them, and he is embarrassed by them. I wonder if the people getting them these days will feel the same way 40 years from now? I change my mind in line at McDonald's,no way am I going to let a permanent mark be on me for life-needles are not for me!

Bobby Greer's response:
Some very good points charles.

You hear everyday about more and more athletes in some type of trouble; marijuana possession, rape, illegal weapons, drive-by shootings, etc. The list goes on and on.

Whether they like it or not, athletes are role models. As a child, and still today, I am a sports freak and it tears me up inside that children are exposed to the 'thug' sports heroes of today.

I really believe that Tyler is different from the stereotype hero of today's youth.

On another note, If North Carolina were to win the NCAA Championship this year, do you think he would return for his senior season? Or would he go pro?

Everyone has a family....let's stay focused on the article about Tyler. He is a good kid and remember you can choose your friends but not your family.

Way to go Tyler.

Bobby Greer's response:
Did anyone watch North Carolina play North Carolina State on Wednesday evening? Man! Another big game for Tyler. He never stops while he is on the court. 32 points, 12 rebounds, 5 steals! He has my vote for National Player of the Year!

You get to vote for National Player of the Year? Cool.

Bobby Greer's response:
Let me rephrase that..... IF I had a vote, it would go to Tyler!

Thanks for correcting me.

BTW..... Tyler has also been named the Sporting News Player of the year. This is one of the REALLY biggies. By earning that honor, North Carolina will retire his uniform after his college career. It will hang in the rafters alongside Michael Jordan's retired uniform. WOW! What an honor!
