The future of Will Bogan

Posted Wednesday, May 21, 2008, at 5:08 PM

It was widely publicized Wednesday that SEMO's 6 foot 10 inch big man from Bell City, Will Bogan, will be ineligible to play basketball for the Redhawks during the first academic semester of the 2008-2009 season.

There are rumors that he may transfer to a junior college but nothing has been confirmed.

Any comments?

I don't think going to a JUCO is an option for Will. He will still be ineligible, so at the most he would have a semester of eligibility if he made his grades 1st semester. I have a child at SEMO who knows Will and after bball, Will stopped going to class. My question is, why didn't the Coach know this? Most Coaches keep tabs on their players. I can be Gene Bess knows when one of his misses school. Ultimately, the blame is on Will, he knew what would happen if he didn't make the grades.

Bobby Greer's response:
True! I hate to see anyone with a talent waste it.

If it's such an easy school, why is it that so many engineering students have to try three times before they make it through Calculus II?

SH, Semo is a perfectly good place to start out on an education, especially for those who want to stay close to home. Your education is what you make of it. If you're a goof off, you're a goof off, no matter where you go.

Engineering degree - start at Semo for 2 years to get yourself oriented to the switch from high school, go 2 years to Rolla to finish up your Bachelor's, go to another school (say Iowa) to get your Masters, go to yet another school to get your PhD. It's been done, and it's been done quite successfully.

Nobody expects Semo to be another Harvard. That's not why it's there. No need to badmouth it because it isn't an Ivy League school.

From what I understand, David Heeb couldn't even save himself. But once again, that's another topic.

Bobby Greer's response:
Does anyone know which juco Will is considering transferring to? Is it possibly TRCC?

Goat: Give us a break. SEMO has always been known for a rather easy place to make a grade. TRCC is even easier. If you want to talk Mechanical Engineering, I would ask why the hell you weren't going to Rolla? Criminal Justice, General Studies, Education, History, and other general majors are NOT rigorous. And check out larger D-1 schools and see what kind of majors they have. Will is lazy, has no direction, not a lot of intelligence, and less motivation. That equals early exit. Don't flatter yourself by thinking SEMO is the Harvard of the bootheel........its not.

Bon: Do you happen to know Will? I have known him since 2003. Troubled kid who dang near made something out of nothing.........Not even David Heeb could save this guy.

goat lady, I'll bet the farm that Will Bogan is not going to be a mechanical engineer. This is all speculation, but there is a pretty good chance that Big Will just might have been skipping class. I'll bet the other farm that if he was showing up for class, he probably wouldn't be flunking out. I am not saying that all student athletes take easy classes, but if you show up, you'll most likely pass.

-- Posted by BonScott on Fri, May 30, 2008, at 12:04 AM

"Not that rigorous.." Depends on your major. Did you do Criminal Justice or did you do Mechanical Engineering?

That's great stuff SH. For all the Parrotheads out there, Will would probably relate to "Cheeseburger in Paradise".

All joking aside, the kid might need a little guidance, but he also needs to help himself. As a former college athlete, and with a lot of friends who were as well, we all know the curriculum is not that rigorous. Whether that is good or bad, that's the way it is.(we can save that debate for another time.) Saying all that, I would like to see Will Bogan work harder in the classroom so he can take advantage of the gift that was given to him(free education), but I believe Shannonhoon is right. He doesn't have the intestinal fortitude.

Self annointed R & R critic....

Degree/s in Hard Rock and Metal!

For big Will, I would go with one of the following:

Sludge Factory...Alice In Chains

Help!...Beatles

.38 Special...Teacher Teacher

Far Behind...Candlebox

Zombie...Cranberries

My Poor Brain...Foo

Slow...Fuel

Mama, I'm Comin' Home....OZZZZZZZY!

What a Shame...Tesla

The Slim....Sugar

Corey...music does make the world go 'Round, or as Ratt says, Round AND Round!

Bobby Greer's response:
The 80's big hair jams are timeless. I love them!

So, SH, just what is YOUR degree??

Sorry for the ill-fitting R&R reference, but what do you expect from my generation, kid? Besides, who appointed you the Statesman R&R critic?

Goat: SEMO's standards are far from what I would call rigorous and depending on the major declared, some are down right a joke.

5: If stating that Will is lazy and is wasting a ton of potential and opportunity is pointing out shortcomings, that is what I am doing. I thought I was stating the truth.

Goat: Please use a better Rock N Roll reference on here.

Bon: Good hearing from you .

Bobby Greer's response:
Music makes the world go around shannonhoon. What Rock N Roll reference would you say fits Mr. Bogan?

I agree. Student athletes should take responsibility for themselves. Absolutely.

-- Posted by 5on5 on Mon, May 26, 2008, at 9:36 AM

shannonhoon is right. Student athletes need to take responsibility for themselves. They have been given the opportunity to receive a college education and play basketball for basically free(besides their time & energy), so they should take full advantage of this. The sad thing is, so many of these student athletes lose focus. What a shame.

-- Posted by BonScott on Sat, May 24, 2008, at 3:15 AM

Shannonhoon: You are a big person poking fun at a college kid who basically never had anyone show him the right way to do things until he was 16 or 17. But you excel at pointing out others shortcomings don't you?

-- Posted by 5on5 on Fri, May 23, 2008, at 3:08 PM
Bobby Greer's response:
I had a feeling Bogan didn't have much guidance growing up. That's a shame. Maybe he can snap into manhood now and take the bull by the horns!

Okay, I don't mind being called "scrappy," so I guess you're off the hook!

As for our main topic, so many of today's young people have a poor work ethic. I'm sure businessmen would cooberate that. I've heard so many of them complain about how hard it is to find good help.

Somethin' for nuthin! What is that rock star song about "money for nuthin and the chicks for free"?.... Everybody wants to be a rock star, sit around the pool all day, and have hot chicks falling all over them...

Poor, poor role models!

-- Posted by goat lady on Fri, May 23, 2008, at 6:29 AM
Bobby Greer's response:
Is Bogan taking any summer classes to help his situation? I know Tyler Hansbrough is. Now there is a young man with his priorities in order. Makes a few bad choices now and then i.e. jumping off a second story balcony into a swimming pool! but isn't that what being young is all about?

GL, HC has shown that she is most definitely scrappy, and that is a good thing. A lot of people who don't like her personally or her politics are grudgingly admitting that she isn't a shrinking violent willing to quietly go into the good night. If the roles were reversed I think that BO would have thrown in the towel by now. I for one wouldn't want to be locked in Thunderdome with HC. Thump! Bang! Ouch!! Oh, BTW, I hope that Will Bogan can get his act together. Hard work carries a person much further than talent.

FJGuy, are you comparing me to Hillary Clinton???!

-- Posted by goat lady on Thu, May 22, 2008, at 8:52 PM

Oh boy! In this corner we have GL, and in the other corner we have SH! SH, you apparently aren't watching the Democratic slug-out! You're in for a tussle because women can be much scrappier than men.

-- Posted by FJGuy on Thu, May 22, 2008, at 7:29 PM

Shannonhoon, as usual, you read only about half of the comments we post. I said Semo's "academic standards" are rigorous. I know nothing about their athletic standards, and, even if I did, I was talking about Semo -- not Bogan.

-- Posted by goat lady on Thu, May 22, 2008, at 5:52 PM

Goatlady.....that is funny! What the heck is your definition of rigorous? You obviously know nothing about college athletics. Bogans is LAZY on and off the basketball court.

Future of Will Bogans is this: find a couch, text on a cell phone, watch ESPN and think he will be on there someday, gain weight, hang out in a mall.

-- Posted by shannonhoon on Thu, May 22, 2008, at 11:03 AM
Bobby Greer's response:
That's funny shannonhoon!

I would love to see the guy turn this into something positive, but ultimately it is up to him.

A big dissappointment. The word is he even skipped finals. What did he expect.

-- Posted by Dynaflow on Wed, May 21, 2008, at 11:15 PM
Bobby Greer's response:
He skipped his finals? OMG! That's really intelligent for anyone who is 'just getting by'! I had not heard that. Even at 19 years old, knowing that you do have some potential, you just have to get your priorities in order. Maybe he doesn't have anyone to guide him. If I were Scott Edgar, I would make sure someone was guiding him.

Well, well, that's sad, but not really too unexpected. Semo's academic standards are pretty rigorous. Even the ball players need to be strong academically to make it there. If he goes to a 2-year college, he'll probably need some tutoring. It may be hard to work that into the practice schedule.
