Got Olympic controversy?

Posted Tuesday, August 12, 2008, at 9:11 AM

What was the Spanish Olympic basketball team thinking?
Each time the Olympics roll around it seems that some participating country has to throw itself into the limelight with some type of controversy....... This year's Olympics are no exception.

Spain's Olympic basketball teams have risked upsetting their Chinese hosts by posing for a pre-Games advertisement making slit-eyed gestures. The ad for a courier company, which is an official sponsor of the Spanish Basketball Federation, occupied a full page in the sports daily Marca, the country's best-selling newspaper.

The ad features a large photograph of the basketball team posing in full Olympic kit on a basketball court decorated with a picture of a Chinese dragon. Every single player appears to be pulling back the skin on either side of their eyes.

Thank God it is not an American team!

Will anything become of this incident? Your thoughts?

orange....Metal Health

apple....Light my fire!

-- Posted by shannonhoon on Mon, Aug 25, 2008, at 11:17 AM

I'm not a big Doors fan but I wouldn't say Morrison sucks. Comparing "Light my Fire" and "Metal Health" are like comparing apples to oranges.... they are both great tasting and good for the soul but they look different on the outside.... although the orange will 'roll' a little better than the apple will!

-- Posted by greer958 on Mon, Aug 25, 2008, at 10:41 AM

You go Dubrow....

Morrison's only response is...those suck too. He is the ultimate music critic and if you don't like he does, you are a commercial loving idiot.

-- Posted by shannonhoon on Sat, Aug 23, 2008, at 9:08 PM

Morrison, you SUCK!!!! I've got many more songs to my name than those few. How 'bout "Party All Night", "The Wild and the Young", "Winners Take All" for a few. And of course "Love's a *****"!!!

-- Posted by KevinDuBrow on Sat, Aug 23, 2008, at 4:36 PM

Forgot to tell you KB....Jim Morrison is all knowing when it comes to music. If he doesn't like it....it sucks. He must have never given Metal Health(Bang Your Head) a listen.

-- Posted by shannonhoon on Sat, Aug 23, 2008, at 10:09 AM

Back to the "slant-eyed" Spaniards...maybe they're all near-sighted.

And, other than making hits from two covers from Slade ("*** on feel the noize" and "Mama we're all crazy now") and "Bang your Head", you suck DuBrow.

-- Posted by Jim Morrison on Sat, Aug 23, 2008, at 12:19 AM

Shoot, I wish I could coach like Joshe Doubdy. I mean, I saw a game once last year where he had those Puckerhoe Injuns running and gunning and chirping throughout the WHOLE gym, all the while having a Charlie Chaplin-looking coaches vest on with his best Winner's Choice black suede shoes on.

"Sometimes I dream, that he is me,

If I could just be like Doubdy, I wanna be I wanna be, if I, could just be like Doubdy".

Gatorade commericals baby!!!

Still waiting.......

Told you.....5 on himself can't resist.....I think he likes me.

-- Posted by shannonhoon on Mon, Aug 18, 2008, at 10:54 PM

Didn't play...just yells at TV's. Check out BG's other blog and watch 5 on 5 start spewing about how great Roy Williams is now that I have explained several weaknesses (in my opinion) which to me have been obvious watching NC games since Tyler has been there.

Still waiting for 5 on 5 to tell us what team he played on and for what coaches.

-- Posted by shannonhoon on Mon, Aug 18, 2008, at 1:01 PM

5on5, I'm glad you didn't have to punch your dad. That's never a good thing. Where did you play b-ball? Did you play in southeast Missouri? I'm originally from California but have ties to the bootheel.

-- Posted by BonScott on Sun, Aug 17, 2008, at 7:37 PM

hoon-my dad hardly watched me play and had he said something negative about my coach i would have punched him!!! You should really work on booosting that self-esteem. Always resorting to namecalling.

-- Posted by 5on5 on Sun, Aug 17, 2008, at 6:58 PM

I'm just happy to be an expert in something. Thanks for the compliment.

What is all this all-state stuff? What exactly is that?

-- Posted by BonScott on Sun, Aug 17, 2008, at 6:11 PM

5 foot 3, You Lose Amateur Night AGAIN.

-- Posted by shannonhoon on Sun, Aug 17, 2008, at 5:30 PM

Staley, you must be on the cabbage again....I am all state in partying and that is it. 5 is a fool and his mommy and daddy got his high school coach canned for not playing him enough. He's an expert in stupidity.

-- Posted by shannonhoon on Sun, Aug 17, 2008, at 2:52 PM

Can't argue with that.

-- Posted by I.B. Le Truth on Sat, Aug 16, 2008, at 10:58 PM

I did I.B...I'm a professional mommy! It doesn't get any better than that!

-- Posted by mrsdolphin on Sat, Aug 16, 2008, at 10:52 PM

OK, who made it to the Professional League here?

-- Posted by I.B. Le Truth on Sat, Aug 16, 2008, at 9:04 PM

who said anything about being an expert. you have resorted to name calling. what school btw?

-- Posted by layne staley on Sat, Aug 16, 2008, at 5:11 PM

WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I was all-state and played two sports(baseball and basketball) in college and scored 1500 points in college...

That makes me an expert right along with those guys........ yippee!!!!!

-- Posted by 5on5 on Sat, Aug 16, 2008, at 11:31 AM

Johnny 5alive,

seriously...quit getting pulled into hoon and bon's act. Those guys just pretend to be stupid. Let me provide a breakdown: both were all state basketball players and one coached a baseball team who won state as well. doudy is a punk, but his wife is way cool junior. Now you know.

-- Posted by layne staley on Sat, Aug 16, 2008, at 10:31 AM

Guess I have to take that back: Hoon just THINKS he's always right! You can never have too much orange.

-- Posted by goat lady on Fri, Aug 15, 2008, at 9:36 PM

Coach Doudy is former 2A Coach of the Year back when he was an assistant at Puxico. Amazing basketball mind. After the bear was spotted in Advance, they have decided to go with the change. Doudy pushed for it and got what he wanted as a new coach. Advance Black Bears sounds pretty **** good to me.

-- Posted by shannonhoon on Fri, Aug 15, 2008, at 9:26 AM

Doudy? It's spelled DoWdy!!! Yea I'll take that into consideration, especially coming from a couple of dudes that can't even spell a simple name! ha

-- Posted by 5on5 on Fri, Aug 15, 2008, at 9:01 AM

I heard Coach Doudy was a hell of a coach. Didn't they change their mascot in Advance to Black Bears?

Maybe Coach Doudy was 5on5's mentor and that is where he got all of his knowledge....Eureka, Gold at last!!!

-- Posted by BonScott on Thu, Aug 14, 2008, at 11:15 PM

Never claimed to know anything about coaching. If I wanted to help in this area, I would spend time in the Advance gym hanging with Coach Doudy. Hawaii 5 O 5: Pay attention to the GOAT's last past and move on.

-- Posted by shannonhoon on Thu, Aug 14, 2008, at 10:39 PM

Are you trying to start that again 5on5? I thought that topic was over.

-- Posted by BonScott on Thu, Aug 14, 2008, at 9:41 PM

No sense beating a dead horse Hoon. You simply just don't know what you are talking about as far as the coaching topic is concerned.

namecalling anyone???

-- Posted by 5on5 on Thu, Aug 14, 2008, at 7:30 PM

Should the U.S. protest the Chinese prepubescent gymnastic team, or just give it the old wink and nod that to the most brazen cheaters go the spoils?

-- Posted by FJGuy on Thu, Aug 14, 2008, at 7:21 PM

The Greek was especially impressive, Bobby!

Shannonhoon is always right...

-- Posted by goat lady on Thu, Aug 14, 2008, at 5:45 PM

Too big for me! Wiki definition! Thought it would help although shannonhoon is right..... the definition didn't say anything about the power of money.

-- Posted by greer958 on Thu, Aug 14, 2008, at 2:07 PM

Bobby,

Did all those big words come out of your head or did you just copy that diatribe from someplace?

Thanks for the info, though.

-- Posted by ct on Thu, Aug 14, 2008, at 2:05 PM

You forgot the paragraph on money's role in the games also.

Man, Coach K sucked two years ago. NO way those players could have overcome that.

-- Posted by shannonhoon on Thu, Aug 14, 2008, at 1:58 PM

Not to change the topic or anything, but I always did like the song Never Been to Spain by Three Dog Night. Goat Lady, your comment reminded me of it. I don't really know anything abt the Olympics except that they're in China this time.

Bobby Greer's response:
ct......

The Olympic Games is an international multi-sport event. The original Olympic Games (Greek: Ολυμπιακοί Αγώνες; [Olympiakoi Agones] (help·info)) were first recorded in 776 BC in Olympia, Greece, and were celebrated until AD 393. Interest in reviving the Olympic Games proper was first shown by the Greek poet and newspaper editor Panagiotis Soutsos in his poem "Dialogue of the Dead" in 1833. Evangelos Zappas sponsored the first modern international Olympic Games in 1859. He paid for the refurbishment of the Panathenian Stadium for Olympic Games held there in 1870 and 1875. This was noted in newspapers and publications around the world including the London Review, which stated that "the Olympian Games, discontinued for centuries, have recently been revived! Here is strange news indeed ... the classical games of antiquity were revived near Athens."

The International Olympic Committee was founded in 1894 on the initiative of a French nobleman, Pierre Frédy, Baron de Coubertin. The IOC has become the heart of the "Olympic Movement," a conglomeration of sporting federations that are involved in the organization of the Games. As the Olympic Movement has grown so have the profile and complexity of the Games. Participation in the Games has increased to the point that nearly every nation on earth is represented. With the proliferation of satellite communications, the internet, and the continuing trend towards globalization, the Olympics are consistently gaining supporters. This growth has created numerous challenges, including political boycotts, the use of performance enhancing medications, bribery of officials, and terrorism.

Despite these challenges the Olympics have continued to thrive and flourish. Each successive Games attempts to add more events in order to keep up with the ever-evolving advance of athletic expression around the world. The current games in Beijing comprise of 302 events in 28 sports. The most recent Winter Olympics in 2006 featured 84 events in 7 sports. While the Olympic Games do continue to evolve, they also encompass many rituals that were established during their infancy in the late 19th and early 20th century. Most of these traditions are on display during the Opening and Closing ceremonies, and the medal presentations. For its part, the Olympic Movement has made considerable progress in fostering participation among as many nations as wish to compete, as well as focusing on the Olympic motto: Citius Altius Fortius - Faster, Higher, Stronger.

You have been schooled on the Olympics!

Kobe Bryant and an older, more mature and determined Lebron James will be a primary difference in the outcome of this game as opposed to the game 2 years ago.

-- Posted by 5on5 on Thu, Aug 14, 2008, at 9:54 AM

20+ WIN! Revenge. Thank goodness they didn't have the same coach as they did two years ago or they would have gotten crushed.

Amateur night....Part 2 opens Thursday AM!

-- Posted by shannonhoon on Thu, Aug 14, 2008, at 9:36 AM

Go USA!

-- Posted by greer958 on Thu, Aug 14, 2008, at 8:18 AM

Team USA wins by 10-15 tomorrow morning against Greece!

-- Posted by 5on5 on Wed, Aug 13, 2008, at 9:19 PM

GOAT is Queen of stereotyping and then saying someone like me is disrespectful....I love it!

Keep the labels and generalizations coming GOAT.

China knows what it takes to win.....11 year olds, fake Birth Certificates, and hardcore discipline. I say take a nap and stay up and watch tonight GOAT....worth it. And stop using vulgarities like phooey on here, you will be censored.

-- Posted by shannonhoon on Wed, Aug 13, 2008, at 10:23 AM

Maybe the Spanish just have a weird sense of humor. Humor is tricky. It can be so easily misconstrued. I've never been to Spain, so I have no first-hand knowledge.

Wish I could have stayed up late enough to watch the women's gymnastics. I thought the Russians were ahead when I went to bed. Ah, Bela Karolyi - what a show!

Considering the way the Chinese prepare their gymnasts, it's a wonder ANYONE can compete with them! When there's no outside accountability for a coaching team, and they have the government breathing down their necks with a win-at-any-cost mentality, it makes no difference to them if they wreck a few little kids in the process. ("Oh, phooey, we broke this one! Let's get another one off the bench!")

-- Posted by goat lady on Wed, Aug 13, 2008, at 7:48 AM

the goat fights fire with fire...one race card laid is one race card played. But since the French are considered white, no harm done I guess.

-- Posted by layne staley on Tue, Aug 12, 2008, at 10:53 PM

The Spanish must be as rude as the French.

-- Posted by goat lady on Tue, Aug 12, 2008, at 9:10 PM

Nope. My thoughts immediately turn to that dang swimmer kid who is killing all competitors and making the Olympic games exciting for all ages to watch. Oh, and my thoughts also turn to some other stuff too I can't type about.
