The Big DancePosted Monday, March 16, 2009, at 10:54 PM
"The Shot" made by Valpo's Bryce Drew.
What a great month or so for college basketball. The conference tournaments have been played, champs crowned, and the seedings are in for the NCAA Men's Division I Basketball Tournament. Each year seems to bring more and more upsets and with the parity in college basketball, this year should be no different. Will this be the year a number 16 seed finally knocks off a one seed? What about cinderella teams? Who will they be this year? Can there be another version of Jim Valvano's NC State Wolfpack team lurking in the field? Oh, and how about those buzzer beaters? This is the best time of the year to be a basketball fan! March Madness does not only get fans all geared up, but players as well. I had the pleasure of having a conversation with Bryce Drew in Chicago in July of 1998. Drew will forever be known as the guy who took "the shot." When we started talking about the tournament, his eyes lit up and he was on top of the world all over again! "The Shot" Drew's senior year in the 1998 NCAA Tournament. In the Midwest Region, 13-seed Valparaiso was facing 4-seed Ole Miss in the first round. Valparaiso was down 67-69 with 4.1 seconds remaining in the game and Mississippi's Ansu Sesay at the free throw line. After Sesay missed both shots, the Crusaders came up with possession -- 94 feet from their basket, and with only 2.5 seconds remaining in the game. On the inbound, the Crusaders used a play known as the Pacer. Jamie Sykes inbounded to Bill Jenkins, who passed the ball to a practically unguarded Bryce Drew. Then, as time expired, Drew released a 23-foot 3-point shot, giving him his 22nd point of the night, and clinching the Crusaders' 70-69 upset and advancing them in the tournament. "The Shot" is seen each year on CBS during "March Madness" and is considered one of the top moments in NCAA history. Drew proceeded to lead the defeat of 12-seeded Florida State University 83-77 in overtime, with a 22-point game. Drew and the Crusaders finally fell to 8-seeded University of Rhode Island by a score of 74-68, with Drew scoring only 18 points. Sports Illustrated would rank it the #5 sports moment of 1998, and Drew secured his place as a Valparaiso, Indiana celebrity along with popcorn guru Orville Redenbacher. What are some of your favorite moments from the tournament? Any upset predictors out there? Who will be crowned "champion" this year? Roy does get a little 'verclemped' doesn't he?
Did all things well and deserve it. Did you see the press conference? Kleenex to the rescue!
Great game!!! How about the defense? That was a nice surprise.
Congrats to Pyscho T! Storybook ending to one of the finest college careers in the history of the game.
ONE AND ALL>>>>GREER, WE DOOD IT!!! GO NC!!
But then again there is next year, and if we can get the escapees from Memphis, et.al.??? ROCK CHALK!!!GO KU>>>>>>>>>>>I got third in the pool, good payout!!!Molater, among youse SEMO, CONGRATS TO THE GANG FROM PB!!!!(and no Kleenex for Roy W., his boys had the GOODZ!!!!), much later, kk
IT'S ONLY HALF-TIME, but d___, go HEELS!! NC better keep their game ON!!! Record first half score OR NOT!!Let's see how this second half runs!!?? molater, kk.
RobbieC! What up!
Spartans are impressive and fun to watch this story unfold. They are a 2 seed, but it still seems Cinderella to me. The Heels are playing their best ball (which for them means hitting shots) at the right time and must be a huge favorite, even with MSU having an incredible home court advantage.
On a more important note....why the helk can't they get anyone better than Clark Kellogg to do the dangmn games? I did need Stuart Scott meets Barack Obama messing with my sporting events. Billy Pucker sacked, but tough to take Kellogg who should probably do the games for BET.
I'm leaning towards the Heels. Surely they won't disappoint 4 years in a row.
Final four teams....who wins it all?
Just got off the phone with Kleenex. They are bringing you and Roy a case each.
Traditionally, this Tar Heel team comes out flat after a week off. Sure hope Coach Roy has been working them with some serious scrimmage!
NOPE.
ESPN, Dick Vitale, and all the other talking head idiots get that. Self Promotion IS required!
Will the real Slim Shady please stand up?
Good point....college athletics = a big money game!
As a media person promoting certain college teams where coaches are in the limelight recruiting players...shouldn't I get some kickback?
Bon: Double teams very good and rotation after the DT good. On ball D, alright. I know they had SOMEthing to do with it, but OU missed shots also......open shots, which they actually did more often than not later in the year exception being . Will be interesting to see if 'Nova and another will also be missing shots in Rock City. If they are...Carolina wins. Will echo Mark Few, the Zag's leader, when he said if everyone plays their best...Carolina wins! Bingo, although UCONN would be right there at the end of that one! BUT, my point is NC relies on hitting shots and the other team missing shots too much. Most other teams try to control these percentages more with solid offense and hard nosed defense.
GREER: You think any of these guys couldn't be characterized as "shady"?
Come on Hoon. I agree with some of your comments about UNC and ole Roy, but you have to admit they had a pretty darn good defense scheme against OU. Their double teams were crisp and their on the ball D was very intense. If they play the next two games like they did the previous, ole Roy is going to hang another banner.
Still biting my tongue till after the tourney on Roy.....the remaining three coaches:
1. Wright....Would love to play for this guy. So many different looks at both ends of the court. Players love the relationship they have with this guy. Will only get better!
2. Izzo....Comes at you with a game plan with underachievers. If the plan works they win. If not, he doesn't adjust much during a game. Does get 110% from his players though!
3. Calhoun....Shady! He is a winner but very shady!
Hoping you are right GREER.....
Out of the 4 coaches in the tourney...can anyone take on the mission of ranking them? Here is HOON's assessment, which means NOTHING.
1. Calhoun....Recruiter (illegally????? maybe!), winner, hard nosed, all around teacher of the game. Teams are consistently tough to beat and in the hunt.
2. Izzo.....As rugged and hard nosed of a bball guy as you will get. His tactics for teaching hustle, blockouts, and toughness are well known. IF anyone had them down to make it this far, it would be hard to believe. Does it with less talent or more talent, doesn't matter and MAKES you play his way.
3. Roy....ONLY b/c he has won one, in the Hall of Fame, blah blah blah is he above Wright. GREAT recruiter. GREAT system coach. Problem I have is the system. Come down and shoot any shot you like and play mediocre defense on the other end. Horrible game management, little to no adjustments during a game, less discipline in his program than is reported. That said, his teams win.
4. Wright. Solid coach on both ends. Great motion offense, great sets, great variation on defense and gets it done with less talent...although NO fooling, 'Nova is talented!
If 'Nova shoots the ball well and the Heels have an average shooting performance, Roy will be soaking up the tears and dropping to #4 on HOON's meaningless list.
Detroit Rock City! Go Tarheels!
Diver Down BABY! Me and RobbieC enjoyed watching the Tigers compete and finally bow out to the Huskies, who look to me like a favorite for this thing. Carolina: Still scares me with the entire game resting on whether they hit shots and their opponents don't. 'Nova has been hitting them, but then again, so had OU. MichSt. is just crazy rugged, grind it out, control tempo, Big 10 stereotyped ball. Going to be good.
Can Hansbrough play worse? I think not and look for big things in the Motor City.
Anybody seen Hoon?
I fear he may still be passed out under one of the pianos at Silky O'Sullivans'!
YESSS! Rock Chalk, CHOKEHAWK, does come to mind after they let Mich State back into the game....they didn't keep their game in the first half in the same way for the second half, they needed to go home and think about IT...OU Rocks and Mizzou are keeping the DRIVE ALIVE! We can all pray that Sherron and company stay in school for next year!!!Go Big Twelve!! I stand amended, and remain, kk....I'm just waiting for my Razorbacks to come together with a team like Moncrief, Delph, Reed and company to come out of the Boston Mountains and kick some more tuckuss!!
OTHER THAN THIS NOISE,LET'S PARTY ON!!! The smoker is getting hot and the wood is ready for some ribs and some shoulder.....March Madness CONTINUES!!!!and my rub rocks!!!Y'all be good, hear?? molater,kk

Chickenhawks..... done.
I'm still shocked! Mizzou winning killed my bracket but well worth a Mizzou win! Let the madness continue!
Down with the Dookies! hehehehe!
kk, tone it down a bit so I can understand what you are trying to type. Thanks.
GREER!!! WHODATHUNK, MIZZOU putting up 100 on Memphis?? HOLD THAT TIGER!!! GO BLACK AND GOLD!! DOOK GOES DOWN TO 'NOVA!!!! YEAH!, BABEEE!! This is March Madness at its BEST, and we have yet begun to party!!! I've got some ribs ready for the smoker and we're going to be snowed in up here according to our prognosticators, but I really don't give a rats buns, gotcha, anywhooo, y'all root for the crimson and royal tomorrow night and we might just show the biG east(SIC) THAT THEY AIN'T ALL THEY THOUGHT ANYHOW!!!,GO BIG TWELVE!!!,molater, kk
Be sure to go to BB Kings House of Blues on Beale. My man Preston Shannon can rock the house!

Has anyone ever said "I hate you" hoon? LOL!
Have a blast!
Heheheheheheheheeee!
How much you willing to spend GREER!>?
Hoon....I have failed in my attempt to cabbage on to tickets for Memphis.
Is anyone going?
You know Buffalo Wid Wings in PB is going to be hopping when the Heels play.....should probably plan on arriving 4 hours early and spending $300 on a nice meal and adult beverages.
If we don't get any good suggestions, think I'll sit at home in a recliner, eat Taco Bell, and drink ice tea!
I feel some tears coming on right now......
Going to be a GREAT weekend of ball.....any suggestions on where to join others in watching these games?
Whether the Heels win it all or lose in the next round one thing is for sure, Roy's presser will make blatent blubberer Dick Vermeil look like Chuck Norris.
Bon...speaking of one style of ball....your tarheels only play one style of ball and it is glorified streetball. Thanks goodness they are the most talented team in the nation because they aren't the best prepared. Agree on the Cat's and 'Makers......MU may make a game of it, but WoW Memphis is loaded with 6'9 athletes. Have a box of Kleenex ready for Roy's press conference! (hope I am wrong!)
I think Mizzou will be exploited by Evans from Memphis and that MU can only play one style of b-ball which will ultimately be their demise. I do however, think UNC will make a run to the championship game and win the big one. And watch out for Arizona and Purdue to pull upsets. That's all I've got right now. Can't wait for it to start up again Thursday.
Bon....any crazy thoughts about this weekend's ball?
Your right Hoon. Obviously to much liquor. I was thinking that was on the Back in Black album for some reason.
I have NC, Pitt, Memphis and Kansas going to Detroit Rock City!
Down with the Dookies! Lick it up!
What BIG teams go down this weekend....
NC BEware. KU Down and out. Dook Lookout. Lville watch it. Get ready for a big one or two to have sad eyes. What is the over-under on Kleenex used by Roy when he coaches Tyler for the last time?
No you weren't Bon.........you sang it!!!!!!
I know that Hoon....No, what a minute, I was dead.
Dirty Deeds are though.
I'm working on some..... they are NOT cheap!
I have both losing and missing out.....
This is one fun tourney to watch and I would say most of us will be surprised at NOTHING?
Anyone scored any tix in Memphis to see Hansbrough and Carolina battle to go to another Final 4?
Couldn't quite make it out....but I'm thinking it's in RockChalkonics.
I have Mizzou losing to Memphis and Kansas going on to the Final Four.
KK, can you type any louder!? That was the first post in a long time that was on steroids. KU won't live through the weekend, nor will MU, although both team's seasons have been incredible. Self did one helk (hell will get you cencored on here) of a job this season, much like Doudy and Hick did in Stoddard Co.
And BTW: What is ####***&&%%$$@@!!! ? GREER, you may need to step in and ban this Big 12 cusser.
ROCK CHALK, JAYHAWK, KU!!!! SWEET SIXTEEN AGAIN!!BABEEEE!! GO, MIZZOU!!RIP 'EM, TIGERS!!BLACK AND GOLD!!!SWEET SIXTEEN!!! BEAR DOWN!! ARIZONA!!, GO WILDCATS!!!SWEET SIXTEEN!!! Yes, I took a bath on ASU, and a few others, but I'm still in second in our pool, by ONE point!!!Best check those chickenhawk and chokehawk jokes for the rest of the week, Mr. Sherron Collins, and Mr. Cole Aldridge might still have something to say to your ####***&&%%$$##@@!!!at the weekend approaching!!A TRIPLE DOUBLE, ARE YOU SERIOUS??CHOKE ON THIS!!!My three colored, feathered, bud from out in Lawrence is for real until they SHOW-ME otherwise, and I still say, GO MIZZOU!!as you can see, I'm of TWO MINDS on this subject, FOR NOW, and don't forget them OKIES, GO OU!!!!!!BIG TWELVE LIVES ON!!!Truly schizoid at this time of year, (JUST A REASON TO BBQ AND PARTY LIKE A ROCK STAR!!!)molater, kk
TarHeels style will require a lot of good luck and fortune, ie: hot shooting, to win the title. I don't their chances.
Chickenhawks can't do it...not enough talent.
Not a Jayhawk fan RC.... just saying they are playing in the weakest region in the tourney.
Go Tar Heels and Mizzou!
Okay Greer...I stand corrected. My hubby would be very upset with you for slaughtering all of those names...on purpose. At least I do claim to be a Tarheel fan! Speaking of which...the Tarheels better get it together! This one looks as if it is going to be close!
Rock Chawk Chokehawks!
That '90 game was hot, hoon!
You still think Kansas was a bad choice to make it to final four?
Yeah, Jean Simons....that's what I said. Played with Peter Cross, Base Freeney, and Paul Handley.
Not being a sports fan, you've missed that over half the names mentioned in this blog are incorrect.
Down with the Dookies!
I don't know much about sports, however my husband is a huge KISS fan...it is Gene Simmons. Sorry Greer...had to correct that ;)
Bracket time on Thursday, I'm up on 13 and down on 3, so far tonight I'm only down 1, but I'm sure that can change, staying at #2 in our pool, and Loving It!!!KU, Mizzou, Arizona, and Arizona State, still livin' the dream!!!molater, kk
DO NOT....I repeat in the name of Rock n Roll....DO NOT play games with the Demon.
RobbieC...getting the idea you may have listened to the GOTE too much and feel as though the HOON is NOT a gentle man!
GREER....what about the '90 OT game pitting Rumeal Robinson and the Wolverines taking on Satan Hall's Pirates. Big FT's for Rumeal...1 and 1 down a point with seconds to go.....59% FT shooter. NET/NET!!!!!! AJ Carlimo felt like they had been choked by Lidell Spreewell.
GOAT: stay out of this.
Oops, my bad... I was in a hurry RC..... No one has a TONGUE like Jean Simons!
Gentlemen and Hoon, I feel I must apologize for my outburst last evening. It's just, as a Charter Member of the KISS Army I tend to get a little cranky when I see the word TONGUE misspelled. Nice blog, Greer. Carry on.
robbincrosby must be an Ole Miss fan!!!!! Ouch!!!!
Greer, did you bite your tounge in the lounge? On a side note, Bryce Drew can KMA!!
Did you know that a zag trumps a zip?
How are your brackets looking after the first day?
Have to bite my tounge a liitle longer about Roy..... hoping Tyler, Ty Lawson, Danny Green, Wayne Ellington, Deon Thompson, Bobby Frasor, Tyler Zeller, Ed Davis, etc. can hit on all cylinders each game.
What about Utah's run with Rich Majerus. Triangle and 2ing Lute Olsen and the Wildcats from AZ!
Williamson? C'mon.
NC=crappy defense, streetball structure on Offense, horrible shot selection, NO adjustment in game plan, little value of the ball, HORRIBLE use of time-outs and composure at the end of games, and a poop load of talent. I hope I am wrong but I say they bow out and the over rated Hall of Fame coach is sitting at a podium bawling like a baby. Psycho T is awesome.
hoon... "you've been thunderstruck"
KDB.... Is Corvell the son of Roy?
"For those about to rock" the NCAA tourney, "We salute you!"
Go North Carolina and "T"!
SHoon, I actually typed Siena while I was looking at my bracket last night, my bad. Heck, even this blog article says he is from Valpraiso, which I already knew. I am in a ton of pools and usually win money in half of them. My pick this year----UNC and Coach Roy Williamson, and, OF COURSE my favorite player PSYCHO "T"!!!
Bryce Drew...Sienna? Oh my gosh....
Too many errors to correct on here. Now we have BWayne talking Dancing with the Stars.
GREER: This is falling apart. Just realized it was JIMMY Boeheim and JERRY McNamara leading the Orangemen......
Mistakes=Mistakes.
And by the way, the "shot" by IU was taken on the LEFT wing.............by Steve Alford. Game winner.
Dancing with the stars??????? I know that NCAA teams are dancing when it comes tournament time!!! One of the best was when when Larry Bird went against Magic Johnson and Grant Kesler and beat those Sycamore's back in '79!!!!!!!! Great game and I'll always remember that one.
Well damnation! I thought this was going to be about "Dancing With the Stars".
Don't be so harsh SHoon, I thought I was having some fun thinking back to old NCAA moments. One of the best, though, was when Bryce Drew from Siena hit that shot against Mississippi State........one word.........CLASSIC!!!
Having a Quiet Riot here with all these errors on this one blog...
Correct me if I am wrong and I have been most of the day, but I would think that would be Corliss and NOT Corvell. Also would check and not wreck the spelling on Derick?
Alford's shot from the right wing was one to remember. Coach Jeff Boeheim would have to wait several more years for that elusive title. Mellow Anthony and freshman Jimmy McNamara finally allowed him to cut 'em down!
Good stuff every year.... I do believe Ewing was the first to wear a t-shirt under the jersey. Didn't he have the flu? Totally agree with the shorts. Been there, done that!
Uniform shorts are much nicer now although they are a little ridiculous when they reach lower calf or high ankle.....did get voted 'best legs' back in the hugger days!
Also, as a former IU fan I can't say I remember a more exciting shot in Indiana University history as I did back in '87 when Steve Alford hit that last second shot against the Orangemen or Syracuse and Derick Coleman and company. Wow.
Thanks for the corrections SHoon..........nice. I didn't know this was a spelling bee, thought it was a BLOG. Although 'Nova was my team in the 80's, in the 90's it had to be Arkansas and Nolan Richardson. Man, they were tough and their big guy, Corvell "Big Nasty" Williamson was a man-child. Good memories!
GREER: I think that was Billy Tubbs.....this is getting ridiculous.
Not a fan of Vitale....self promoters like him help the game, but make me want to vomit. Ewing could surely sweat and was possibly first to wear a T under his jersey?! Still had the nuthuggers on though, made the legs look about 5 feet tall by themselves.
What about DManning kicking OU's A** almost singlehandedly? Coach Billy Tibbs and Co. had NO answer and went down as KU celebrated on their home turf!
Chris Webber....what a goob! That was one of the best college teams money could buy!
I'm sticking with Kansas to win the Midwest Region....even though they are young, I think their guard play will win a matchup with L'ville after they have no problem with Michigan State (SOOOO overated)! Weakest region by far.
You crack me up! Seems as if something memorable comes out of each tourney. Will say I love the Jimmy V story and nobody tells it better than Dicky B. I mean Dicky V...as in Vitale.
And never forget that NO ONE sweats better than Patrick Ewing!
While we are on this subject though, who can forget Chris Weber and the Fab Five, baggy shorts, black sox and all going down to Eric Montross, Jim Lynch, and Co. after calling a TO they did not have. What a horrible moment to have to relive, although the millions made in the NBA surely helped ease his mind.
Crap GREER: It wasn't Jim Lynch...it was George Lynch. My bad.
GREER: It wasn't Billy Anders either. It was high flying, gravity ignoring, #32 BENNY Anders who played for the Phi Slamma Jamma back in the day. Yet another mistake by HOON's hands.
I am not feeling the noise DuBrow. It was #54 Ed Pinckney playing big inside and Hall of Famer John Thompson was coach of the powerful Hoyas! I must be rubbing off on you.
SHoon, you have brought me out of retirement with these posts. I absolutely LOVE March Madness and have fond memories of watching those games through the years. Although I agree with the NC State game being one of the all-time greats, I have to say that the '85 Villanova/Gtown was the best ever in my opinion. I'll never forget "Easy" Earl Pickney and company defeating Patrick Ewing and his coach, James Thompson. Very special memories.
GREER....Wouldn't the number one all time memory be of the Wolfpack though in '83? Surely that was as good as any story to date, considering where they finished in the ACC, their record, their ranking, the strategy, and the team they beat which was virtually ALL future pro's. "Whittenburg, Oh that's a long way.................!" And all Hakeem, Clyde the Glide, Billy Anders and Co. could do was stand there in amazement as Guy Lewis cried into his saliva stained towel.
GREER...It ain't Earl the Pearl.....it was D. Wayne dangit! I don't know where my head is today.
GREER....Its freakin' Freddie Brown....my fingers ain't keepin' up with my warped mind! Thanks to my dead heavy metal rock star for keeping me straight. Still have those Hoya's games on tape (Beta!!!hahahaha) and absolutely loved watching Wingate, Williams, Martin, Brown, Jackson, Dalton, and big bad Pat battle in the Big East against Earl the Pearl, Mullins, and also have to battle a **** good GTech club with the Spider and Mr. Mark Price. Good stuff.
GREER...haven't filled one out yet.
I stand corrected thanks to a fellow deceased headbanger, Michael Jackson (#30) was not the Hoya making the errant pass, it was Freddie Thompson (#20) who was consoled by the legendary John Thompson.
GREER....KU???????? C'mon man, you must be looking for a miracle. NC....will have to have a ton of fortune on their side. Their style of play is NOT condusive to winning it all.
Sidenote: A late response to a recent blog about rivals: Duke-Carolina rivalry is for real. They (fans) absolutely HATE each other and refuse to like each other. After getting to see the final game of Hansbrough's career in Chapel Hill, not sitting down for an entire game, hearing Coach K booed each time he talked to an official or walked on or off the court, seeing His Airness parade into the arena and stand and cheer much of the game along with youngin's like Stackhouse, May, Felton, and Juwan Howard (teammate of Stackhouse/Felton), ball is different out there and puts any MU-KU (or similiar rivalry)emotion to shame. Nothing like it. And when the game is at Duke, the atmosphere is apparently turned up several more notches!
Who you got in the final four after filling in your brackets?
I've got Kansas, Memphis, Pitt, and NC..... something tells me I've went with my heart again and not my head!
Too many, too early, BUT MAN WHAT A LINE-UP!!!
I can't get too excited on the first round, 'cause that's just the first pass through the salt shaker........HOWEVER, I must confess
to favoritism{s}.....to wit:
ROCK CHALK!! JAYHAWKS, GO KU..{getting thumped in the Big 12 hopefully got their attention}#3 Seed is going to be a struggle for that young team!!
GO MIZZOU!!!The Tigers have the tools and the Big 12 title. I can be partial to black and gold!!
BEAR DOWN, WILDCATS, GO ARIZONA!!! Twelfth seed might be a tad to low.....we'll see if that seed proves out.GO, WILBUR!!!!
GO SPARKY!!ASU, ASU,ASU!!! Sixth seed is going to have show up with the pitchfork and the rock!!
I can't leave out Roy and those Tarheels, Jim B. and the Orangemen,Louisville/Pitino, UConn, and Pitt, but we all know, coming from basketball country, any day, any game, just put the rock in the hole, THIS MONTH WILL BE A GAS!!! Get those brackets filled in, and into your favorite pool, and HANG ON!!! Regards from the Borderlands, kk
Valvano and the '83 Wolfpack: amazing moment.
Nova over the Hoyas in '85 was a near perfect night and needed to be.
Grant Hill pass to Laetner in '92 heroic.
UCLA's run? Ridiculous and will never be repeated.
Loyola's track meet on hardwood style and the Hank Gathers loss amazing.
Bird V. Magic!
Jordan's game winner.
John Thompson hugging his point guard, Michael Jackson, after his inexplicable pass to worthy.
Great seeing Mizzou do well this year!
NO WAY a 16 seed will win this year/would bet a lot of money on that one.
This bracket seems to be the most wide open I can recall, but look for 4 Powerhouses to make it to Detroit.
