Haug enters MFCA Hall of Fame

Matt, a 1967 graduate of Valle High School in Ste. Genevieve and 1971 graduate of Murray State University, has served as a Head Coach for 35 years.

As a player, Matt quarterbacked the 1966 Valle Warriors to a 10-0 record that included the Warriors outscoring their opponents 535-0. From there, he went to play football at Murray State University where he set the single season Murray State and Ohio Valley Conference passing record in 1969 with 2,327 yards. The Conference and School record stood until 1987, when it was broken by Murray State's Michael Proctor.

As a coach, Matt accepted the Head Coaching Position at North County for the 1973 season, North County's fourth. From 1973 to 1983, North County won 77 games and lost 34 under his guidance. In 1984, Coach Haug went to Dexter, Missouri and served as Head Coach until 1992. His record at Dexter was 57-41, with 6 District Titles. He returned to North County in 1993 and was with the Raiders until 2003, where the record was 102-22. In 2004, he accepted the Head Coaching job at Potosi, Missouri and retired in 2006 as Head Coach. He finished his time at Potosi at 29-11, after taking over a Trojans program that had won 6 games in the previous 6 years.

Coach Haug finished his career with a record of 265 wins and 108 losses. A career percentage of 71%. He has a State Championship appearance in 1997 and 5 state semi-finals appearances. Coach Haug also has a State Track Championship as the Head Coach of the Raiders in 1997.

In his speech at the ceremony on December 5th, Coach Haug noted how important his assistants have been to the development of the students. Those assistants include Tom Donze, Mike Agers and Kelly Pope at North County. Don Jones and Boyce Wooley at Dexter. Jeff Lotz, Brian Jones and Steve Aubuchon at North County and Mark Casey, Nathaniel Wilson and Todd Cabral at Potosi.

He also noted the importance and how appreciative he was to have had Ralph Thomure as his Coach at Valle High School.

Matt Haug has had the support of his wife, Frances (Fenton) Haug, from Murray, Kentucky, throughout his career. Frances is currently the Library Media Specialist/Tech Plan Coordinator at North County High School and maintains the district website. Matt and Frances have five children and three grandchildren.
