I'll be blogging bits from today's game live from the Hummel press box atop Busch Stadium. If you have any questions feel free to shoot them my way.

Carpenter homerun busts tie
Matt Carpenter went deep in the eighth inning with one out to break a tie game and bring the score to 6-5. The homerun was Carpenter's third of the season and measured at 422 feet. His hit started a late inning rally that now has runners on 2nd and 3rd with two outs.

First inning proves costly for Lohse
Kyle Lohse left the game after throwing 90 pitches (64 strikes on only 26 balls). He gave up five earned runs with five strikeouts. The three run first inning haunted Lohse from the start despite settling in to the game. After he gave up a run and two hits in the top of the seventh inning, Matheny pulled him in favor of Rzepczynski who came in and got the final out of the inning.

LaHair homer gives Cubs the lead
Bryan LaHair continues his quest to be the thorn in the side of the St. Louis Cardinals organizations when he jacked a 418 foot homerun in the top of the sixth inning. His 10th homerun of the year, the run gave the Cubs a 5-4 lead.

A first pitch homerun by Matt Holliday broke the three inning tie giving the Cards a 1-run lead. The score stands at 4-3. Holliday's homerun, his seventh on the season, is estimated at 445 feet.

Tied after 3
After three innings, the Cardinals have tied the game up at 3. An Allen Craig RBI double in the first started the scoring. David Freese hit a sacrifice fly in the first to score Craig. A strong second inning double from Tyler Greene put him in scoring position for Furcal.
The Cubs haven't had a hit since the first inning. Lohse continues to dominate with his fastball still clocking in the low-90s.

Lohse settles in
After a rough first inning where he gave up three runs, Lohse had a 1-2-3 second inning where he looked to be settled in. Through his first 30 pitches Lohse had 21 strikes and nine balls. That's a good sign. Lots of pitchers have a rough first inning, so we will see how it goes from here. He did look solid in the second, though.

Lohse struggles in three-run first
The Cardinals starting pitching got off to another rough start as pitcher Kyle Lohse struggled through the first inning giving up three runs. Lohse struggled with control leaving pitches up in the zone.

Freese subbed for Berkman at last minute
Lance Berkman was a last minute scratch from today's lineup. No reason was given, but David Freese is taking his spot in the lineup batting fifth today.

Jon Jay to DL, Beltran not in lineup
Jon Jay was pulled from today's lineup due and placed on the disabled list to renewed shoulder discomfort. Shane Robinson has been recalled from Memphis to fill in for now. The team hated to waste an option on Robinson, who has only been away for 48 hours, but said some things can't be foreseen.
Right fielder Carlos Beltran, while not in the lineup, could be available to pinch hit if necessary late in the game. Matheny believes he will be back soon.

Local students
A lot of Southeast Missouri folks at today's game.
Just talked to some Poplar Bluff 5th and 6th grade students who are going to sing God Bless America before the game. The got to go down on the field and are having a big time.
A group of 8th grade students from Bloomfield Middle School are also here today celebrating 8th grade day.

Mike Shannon
Just rode the elevator up with Cardinals/KMOX broadcaster Mike Shannon. Chatted for a minute about interleague play (he's not a fan in case you were wondering).

Warning track gets a new face
One of the groundskeepers just explained to me the make up of the new warning track here at the stadium. It is now 60-percent sand/40-percent dirt in an effort to make it hold more water. The track feels much softer than in recent years. He's said the players are pretty happy about it, too because it's nicer to slide on.

Cubs take the field
Going a different route, the Cubs have taken the field for batting practice before the Cardinals. It's definitely a great day for some NL Central baseball.

Getting warmed up
Pitchers and catchers are out throwing long toss right now getting ready for the day.
The Cardinals will attempt to stop a four-game losing skid this afternoon as they take on the Chicago Cubs on a gorgeous Tuesday afternoon in St. Louis.
They hope to get back to their winning ways of April. Despite the short losing streak, the Cardinals have still outscored their opponents by 63 runs - second only to the Texas Rangers.
RF Carlos Beltran was named NL Player of the Week on Monday for his performance last week (.360, 9-25, 6 homeruns, 13 RBIs, 30 total bases).
