UCB Blog-Ninth Inning vs. Mets 6/2Posted Saturday, June 2, 2012, at 6:16 PM
Follow the eighth inning at Saint Louis Sports
I imagine at this point the Cardinals are glad to see this game be put to rest. Dickey, the Mets knuckleballer, is going for his fifth career complete game as he comes out in the top of the ninth inning. So far, today, he has held the Cardinals to five hits with no runs or walks.
Rafael Furcal Furcal came to the plate 0-and-3 on the day before bunting safely to make his way to first base. A gorgeous bunt down th third base line, Furcal legged it out and beat the throw.
Daniel Descalso Descalso comes to the plate 1-for-3 on the day and quickly slaps a single to left field. Furcal advances to second base with Descalso safe at first.
Matt Holliday Holliday takes the count to 0-and-2 staying alive through several foul balls before hitting a hard ball to the shortstop setting up a 6-4-3 double play. Furcal pushes on to third base.
Carlos Beltran Beltran came to the plate with two outs in the ninth inning and 1-for-3 on the day against his former team. Beltran, though, was unable to get the job done as he drove the ball to right field for the final out of the game.
The Mets win this one 5-0 and lead this series 2-0. The Cardinals have not scored a run in 19 innings (Wednesday, May 30 at Atlanta in the 8th). It truly amazes me that we don't see more knuckleballers in the game today. I know it's a tough pitch to master, but the guys who do can shut a team down like no one else (see above).
If the Cardinals want to stay in the hunt for the postseason, they need to get something going soon.
