LIVE blog today from Busch Stadium
I will be live blogging from the pressbox high atop Busch Stadium throughout the afternoon today as the Cardinals go for the four-game sweep against the New York Mets.
METS EXTEND LEAD, WALL EATS MURPHY HIT(1-4, Top 6)
Another inning took a turn for the worse for the Cardinals this afternoon as the Mets extended their lead. After a leadoff ground rule double to right field from Daniel Murphy that drove a baseball through a crack in the wagon gate, a David Wright double, followed by a throwing error put Wright in position to tack another run onto their lead.
Wainwright leaves the game with 6IP, 6H, 4R, 3ER, 1 BB & 8K.
METS TAKE THE LEAD ON BELTRAN ERROR(1-2, Top 3)
The Mets strung together a double and two singles to drive in a pair of runs against Wainwright and take the lead. An error on a shallow fly ball to right field by Carlos Beltran pushed the tiebreaker across the plate.
Despite the hiccups, Wainwright struck out Ike Davis looking to wrap up the inning.
CARDINALS GET ON THE BOARD (1-0, Bot. 2)
The Cardinals struck first in the bottom of the second inning after a leadoff single by catcher Yadier Molina. Molina advanced to second base on a groundout by David Freese. Pete Kozma then drove in the leadoff run with a two-out double to right field that was trapped by the Mets sliding center fielder Rick Ankiel.
Wainwright has 4 strikeouts through two innings. He had only 7 in his most recent outing where he threw nine innings of two-hit baseball.
WAINWRIGHT TOSSES SCORELESS 1ST
Adam Wainwright made his way through the meat of the New York Mets lineup as he got Thursday afternoon's game underway. He sandwiched a base hit by Mets second baseman Daniel Murphy with a pair of strikeouts and a shallow pop fly to right field by David Wright.
A two-out double by Carlos Beltran, who was batting in the number three spot for only the second time this season, went wasted on a ground ball to second base by Allen Craig.
BOGGS SOLID IN TRIPLE-A MEMPHIS
How does Mitchell Boggs look in Memphis? 0.00 ERA, 3 hits, 2 BB, 4 Ks in 5 appearances. Don't be shocked to see them bring him back fairly soon.
The real question is who do they send back down?
SOME QUICK FACTS
The Cardinals May batting average is the best in MLB at .301. The Cardinals and Cleveland Indians are the only teams with 11 wins this month.
Jon Jay (3-for-7) and Ty Wiggington (4-for-10) have the Cardinals' best career numbers against Niese among active Cardinals.
David Wright is 1-for-8 career vs. Waino. (Make that 1-for-9 after the first inning popout to shallow right.)
CLASSY MOVE BY CHRIS CARPENTER
Just watched Chris Carpenter run all the way to behind home plate from the bullpen and bring a group of 12 or so kids out into the grass for a photo. He signed some autographs and shook a few hands.
It only lasted a few minutes, but those kinds of things breed lifelong baseball fans.
Coincidentally, he then ran into the clubhouse and came back out with David Freese who took some photos and signed a ball or two as well.
TARP IS ON THE FIELD
It looks like the weather could play a role in today's game. Shortly before 10 a.m. the grounds crew pulled the tarp out on the field in anticipation of a nearby line of storms.
A large swath of rain moving into southern Missouri now could be a factor before the game's completion.
Check back periodically for updates.
WIGGINTON, ROBINSON GET STARTS
In an effort to rest Matt Holliday and Jon Jay for a day, the Cardinals are giving Ty Wiggington (1B) and Shane Robinson (CF) a rare chance to start.
Manager Mike Matheny moved Allen Craig to left field for the afternoon.
Today's Cardinals lineup:
1. Carpenter (2B)
2. Robinson (CF)
3. Beltran (RF)
4. Craig (LF)
5. Molina (C)
6. Freese (3B)
7. Wiggington (1B)
8. Kozma (SS)
9. Wainwright (P)
