LIVE! Blog from Busch Stadium today!
I'll be blogging from the Broeg-Hummel pressbox high atop Busch Stadium throughout the day today. Expect things to heat up somewhere around 3:30 this afternoon.
I'll be in and out throughout the night so check back in from time to time and use this blog to start up some conversation during the game! Things get pretty busy up there, so I come and go, but I will be around.
Tonight's game between the St. Louis Cardinals and the Miami Marlins is set to begin at 7:15 p.m. with Jake Westbrook facing off against Jacob Turner.
The Cardinals struggled against the Marlins in June, but have an opportunity to right the ship with five games against the Marlins and the Astros.
Check back in throughout the afternoon and evening for more updates.
5:45 p.m. Matheny notes
Mike Matheny said in his pregame dugout chat with the media that he was giving Carlos Beltran the night off because he was "getting tired."
In regard to the ninth inning decision to pull Adam Wainwright with a two-run lead in favor of Edward Mujica, Matheny stood by his decision, but acknowledged that those decisions can haunt a manager if he doesn't learn from them.
"I think if you're not second guessing yourself, and trying to go back through the situation and how things played out, then I don't think you care," Matheny said. "We care around here."
"If you don't think about it, how are you going to get better? You figure it out and try to go through different scenarios, but if we do exactly what we did and get three outs, it was the perfect decision. We continue to have faith in our guys. I trust Chief and everybody around here should trust Chief."
5:30 p.m. Carpenter feels good about today's throw
Chris Carpenter said he feels good after throwing a total of 106 pitches in a bullpen session today.
"Today was a good throw and something that we can definitely build on," Carpenter said before Friday night's game. "It definitely was the best throw that I've had so far. I'm looking forward to whatever the next step is. At some point I'm going to start facing hitters again and get going."
Carpenter threw last Sunday with, what he termed to be "so-so" results. He threw again on Tuesday, however, and felt much better about the results.
"The next step will be, I'm sure facing hitters somewhere," he said, noting that could take place in St. Louis or possibly even in Florida.
No timetable, official or otherwise, is in place at this time for his return.
3:15 p.m. Carpenter throws side-session
Chris Carpenter just threw a side session in the Cardinals bullpen. I was watching from well in excess of 400' so it's difficult to say how he looked.
Hopefully we'll know more pre-game when we get to chat with Matheny.
Carpenter appears to be nearing the point in his return where he was located when he was temporarily sidelined about a month ago.
