Things that take you back
It's funny the things that can take you back in your mind to another place in time. Sometimes it's a smell, the first breath of that fresh spring air or maybe a song.
It has always amazed me how one little mental trigger like that can send me into one of my nostalgic phases.
I don't listen to much country music these days, but I did when I was a little squirt.
Anything from Randy Travis' first album reminds of a camping trip with my family and some close friends. We took our boat out on Lake Wappapello and found a small island up north where we just pitched a tent and made the place ours.
Anytime I listen to Dave Matthews it takes me back to a summer several years ago when I spent several weeks traveling from one concert to another.
I went alone with no friends and just took it as an opportunity to do some soul searching. I made some friends along the way and found a few old ones, but I learned a lot about myself then.
I've had to grow up a lot since then, but I learned a lot about what's really important in life. It's not about chasing women, partying all the time or the irresponsibility that comes with being young and thinking you know everything.
It's about happiness. Finding that one thing in life that is in your heart and just simply doing it.
As much as I know you shouldn't live in the past, quite often I find myself listening to something simply because of its uncanny ability to give me just a glimpse of when my life was more simple.
Before bills, credit cards and other responsibility came into the picture.
Sometimes I sit and watch my kids and think about how amazing it is to be at that point in life. To be fascinated with a cardboard box for an hour or to spend the afternoon coloring.
It's a shame we never know how precious those times were until they're gone. Like Tom Keifer sang in a song by his band Cinderella, "Don't know what you've got 'til it's gone."
Once again, I apologize for being so off subject, but like I said I'm in one of those nostalgic phases.

What's the saying? Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned?
He skipped St. Louis this year though. There are talks of maybe a winter tour rolling through the area though so we'll see. Right now I'm just hoping to swing Van Halen tickets.
