I suppose some of you may have been wondering why I've been absent from this blog for so long. It's a fairly long story, but briefly I was admitted to Southeast Hospital two weeks ago for removal of my gall bladder. Subsequently, doctors discovered that it was cancer. I had a second procedure to insert a stent in the bile duct while I was hospitalized. This type of cancer is extremely, extremely rare. In fact, it occurs more often in much older women and in those of Native American and/or Hispanic descent. Since I have (to my knowledge) little of either heritages, the whole thing is a mystery.
More surgery will be needed in the future, which will probably take place at Wash U in St. Louis. My surgeon wants me to recover from this go around and build my strength before that next step takes place. I have no answers to the questions folks keep asking. All I ask is that you, dear readers, keep me in your thoughts and prayers as the battle continues. As I feel better, I'll try to keep you up to date on the blog. Thanks in advance for your prayers. From the chilly Cottonbelt, your humble reporter is signing off. ElFreda
What it's all about I recently attended the Small Wonders Daycare's Christmas program, and it was a true pleasure, especially because my great-niece, Kaycee Wamble, took part. This was her first time to participate in an organized Christmas program, and she didn't fail to delight...
Gertie's Gift One of the many blessings I received when my niece Marietta married Dave Obergoenner in 1994 was making the acquaintance of his sainted mother, Gertie. This diminutive lady was a delight to know. Up-to-date with the latest technology, Gertie didn't let her advancing years stop her from surfing the Internet or slow her crochet hook as she made numerous afghans for family and friends. ...
It's been a long time It has indeed been a long time since I visited this blog. I just haven't had much on my mind that I thought would interest the folks who might check in. But tonight, something is bothering me, and I want to sound off about it. Part of my job is to cover board meetings; granted, not the most exciting proposition, but necessary in order to keep the public informed. Due to the Veterans Day holiday, I was going to be able to cover both the school board and the city board meetings this month...
Pet Show Photo Okay, I know you guys aren't exactly interested in my pets, but since Lesley Palomino graciously sent this photo of Caesar and me at the Golden Living Center Pet Show in September, I decided to post it here. At least he looks good!
Photo Fiasco Update I couldn't get the one photo of the 7-12 month old winners before this week's deadline. I am really, really sorry. I have it now, and am posting it here. I will crop it for the three winners; there's not all of the contestants pictured, but it was obviously taken before the winners were announced. Ron got some great shots of his grandson, that's for sure...
Photo Disaster at Fall Festival I have never had anything like this happen to me in my close to 20 years of taking pictures for newspapers. All of my photos taken during the two-day event, except one, were HORRIBLE! Pardon the shouting, but it was simply that bad. Thank God, Corey was taking photos of the parade, and Mike Williams got photos of all the pageant winners except one...
Orange Slice Fruitcake Recipe I added the recipe to my previous post, but will post it seperately here. I hope you enjoy it. Orange Slice Fruitcake Ingredients: 1 - 1 lb. pkg. orange slice candy 1 - 8 oz. pkg. chopped dates 2 C. pecans, chopped 1 C. flaked coconut (may use more)...
Time for fruitcake! I got into an interesting discussion today with a friend about fruitcakes. Now is the time to start making them for the holidays, especially if you use spirits in the batter and/or glaze. I have an excellent recipe for orange slice fruitcake that I have been making for 27 years. In that time, I've tweaked and perfected it. I'm really proud of the results...
I'm back! Sorry for the long absence from the blog site. Long story, but no matter now. I'm back! I hope those of you who read my blog will come to Bloomfield's Fall Festival next weekend, Oct. 5 & 6. I realize expatriot Southeast Missourians log onto this site, and alas will be unable to attend. I know you'll be here in spirit...
