(Photo)
Standing on the front porch of their general store are Virgie (left) and Homer Mize. Mize Grocery, begun in the early '50s, is one of the few small groceries left in Stoddard County and the only business in Avert. The gas pumps in the foreground still work.

I found this photo which accompanied the Avert story I recently posted. Back in the day, I not only took the photos, I developed the film and printed them, too. Thank God for digital! Sorry about the quality -- my scanner isn't the best, and I don't have a program at home to touch it up. The photo was taken in September 1989.

Cool!! I think the photo looks fine. We don't expect these photos to be modern, digital quality.

That is exactly how I remember that place. Mr. Mize was such a good man.

Wow! talk about memories. My dad and I every day on the way home from Sikeston would stop here and buy a bologna sandwich. Why is it that you can't do that anywhere these days?

ElFreda Cox's response:
Oh, but you can! Stop by Gary's Quick Stop in Dexter, located on the northeast corner of the junction of Stoddard and Hwy. 25. Best sandwiches around. Not brag -- just fact.

My grandparents lived in Avert. We could walk to Mize's and he would always give us candy. Those were the good old days.

Great picture--my inlaws, Oma and Konley Hawk lived down the road and were good friends of the Mizes--Homer and Virgie were raised with my Dad in and around Jesup, AR. Have spent a lot of time in their store at Avert. Remember their credit system? They would tape your receipt behind the counter and you paid when you could.

I was so surprised to see this, Homer Mize was my Great Uncle. It was such a wonderful person, I am so glad that he shared that with so many. I live near Jesup and I also, received pockets full of candy when he came to visit.
