Everything old is new again!
Last weekend my sister and I discovered to our delight that the antique store in Delta, Mo. is under new management! I had a feeling something was different, when I saw the large flower pots of red petunias out front.
And oh, what a difference a woman's touch makes! Stepping through the doorway into the old hardware store/post office is like going through the portals of a time machine. The glass along the east side caught my eye first, of course, but there's so much to look at that, as my friend Emma said, "We'll have to come back! I can't take it all in at once." We were on overload by the time we left!
Wandering through aisles of vintage clothing (love the hats!), decorative boxes, old dressers like my grandmother had, and glittering jewelry, it's easy to be overwhelmed by the rush of memories from the past.
Ellie Cook fell in love with the old building, which she bought in January and opened in April of this year. It had been a rough collection of "stuff" before that, with an occasional auction, I think. Ellie has turned it into art! Items are arranged with a keen eye for the play of colors and textures.
As if the sights aren't enough, there's the sound - Jimmy Dorsey, Guy Lombardo, Elvis Presley - the music from the past echoes through the building from the 33 1/3 LP's on a vintage entertainment center. I could lose myself in that place for days...
As I understand it, Red Door Antiques used to be in the old Scopus School in that town somewhere north of here...Bollinger County?? (Ah, I see another road trip coming up in the near future, as I've never been to Scopus!)
My next project is to find out more about the fascinating old building in Delta! I need to find someone who can give me some background on this former Kelly Hardware Store.
As an added mystery, Ellie has a tintype photo that she found back in one of the post office cubbyholes when she was cleaning. It's the picture of a fairly well-to-do African-American couple. Who knows how long it's been there?
I wish I could post more than one photo at a time, because the pictures are beautiful! I'll change them out, one a day, until I post them all.
Hidden treasure is closer than you think!
