The Return of Laverne and Shirley!Posted Friday, September 11, 2009, at 11:05 AM
Madeline Giles, Sue Colman, and Judy Adkins ride the FHA float in the Dexter parade, circa 1960. Sue and I were seniors; Judy was a junior. Ah, Happy Days!
This is a classic if ever there was: Look at that cozy windmill and the little flower-strewn picket fence! Judy says that she kept the dress for a long time and remembers that the skirt was blue, the blouses were white, and the vests were RED! I have no doubt that we looked like twin versions of SNOW WHITE! I have several observations: * Why did Sue get to wear the classy red formal with the long white gloves, while we had to dress like something out of a Disney cartoon???? (Mrs. Rankin, what were you thinking?!) * And why were those horrible CAT EYE glasses so popular in the fifties?? I look like someone from a FAR SIDE CARTOON! * Why do I have no memory of this life-changing moment in my high school career???? * And why am I posting a photo that makes me look like Laverne dressed up like Snow White, as drawn by Gary Larson in the funny papers...?? * Was the Fonz driving that big beautiful car, which I will show you on my next blog? If the fins were any bigger, it could fly! In the meantime, I'll ask my automotive expert friend to identify the make and model. Till then, Happy Days, ya'll! How funny. You'd think I would have some memory of such an historic event as seeing my big sister up on a parade float, but nada. Strange that neither of us remember. Maybe we've been replaced with dopplegangers and we have no memories from before the exchange. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.
No worries 52, I don't remember much of my High School daze either! GREAT blog MadDog, Fonz, Laverne and Shirley, Nastalgia! AWEsome.
I, too, got to participate in the parade for FHA my senior year. I had a 15 year old low rider pick-up (my very first vehicle!), and I was SOOO proud to have everyone see it! Then again, all I got to do was follow our float, and carry about 15 other seniors in the bed! But oh, the memories!
I recognized Sue Coleman immediately! I always thought she was so pretty. I graduated with her younger brother, Dean.
I think you all look cute as can be! I think it looks like the parade scene in "Animal House" right before everything went crazy!
My sister was Carnival Queen so maybe she rode on a different float?? Ahh, the memories.
I'm at the office, so I can't check the yearbooks, but if she was Carnival Queen in '60, I have no doubt that she was in the same parade!
I'm not sure the small schools do that anymore for the queens & their courts. I think they just stick them in a convertible and send them 'round.
In fact, one year I was watching the parade, and I thought, "Hey, haven't we seen that girl??" And I found out that if a girl had won several queen contests, she had several cars & drivers lined up to take her through the parade over & over!
Ha! Did she change dresses, too? Doubt that. DHS had lots of chances for girls to get to be a queen or attendant. The high school where I teach has a policy--only seniors can win. We only have a couple of queens--prom queen and homecoming. All classes get to have a nominee, but the senior gets the crown. I think that stinks! Nobody here cares what I think though, so the policies remain.
If your parade was in '60, my sister was not in it. She was the year before though. Lovebooks will figure me out sometime, but I hope she doesn't reveal my name online. A subtle hint will do it, lovebooks.
What a great photo! I confess I have not been back in the area to witness a home town parade in many years but cannot imagine that they don't still make floats. That's just downright un-something. After all, a parade with no floats is just a traffic jam.
Haha! Clever observation, dhs73! Dexter parade is next Tuesday. We'll count the floats and get back to you.
gl, will you be riding in one of the queen floats?? Just kidding of course.
Well, I applied to enter my goat-driven three-wheeled cart in the parade, but the authorities haven't gotten back to me yet... It's not exactly a "queen" float....more like a derelict chicken coop...
Bring it on, will be looking for your unique ride. Does it have power steering????
It has intermittant steering, depending on which way the goat want to go!!

Goat Lady--I'd be offended if I were you! Why WOULDN'T you be on a queen's float? Who's to say you aren't Marilyn Monroe reincarnated? I have an idea that you're a close match! ---and I thought dexterite was the nice guy!
Gonenow, I was meaning which float would gl be riding,,, not if. I know better than that, I'm not hoonie of course.

Gonenow, this conversation just shows how the written language can be inadequate when it comes to innuendo. Dexterite's meaning could easily be taken in a sarcastic fashion, but it never occured to me to take it that way.
Haha, as two old English teachers, you and I are very aware of both the beauty and the limitations of the English language, aren't we? I wonder that foreigners can ever make heads or tails of it! (And there's another of those idioms that drives them crazy!) (Ack! I can't say ANYTHING without using an idiom!!!)
MD, it was 1999...my senior year. It wasn't much to speak of. A trailer of sorts that was decorated a bit...no pretty ribbons and paper mache and the like. I was in a low rider pick-up right behind them.
dexterite--I would NEVER infer that you were a hoon. I was, of course, teasing you. We all love a goat--especially a goat lady!

Yes, your moms were "hotties"!! There may not be many photos out there from the 50's. Do you have your mom's Reveille yearbook from 1960? That's the year she was FHA queen and we were her attendants. Most of the time, she wore her hair very long, straight, and loose, but the yearbook picture shows her hair shorter and more "fixed."
