The view from my deck
On a cool, untypical July evening, I'm sitting on the deck, listening to what must be the most peaceful sound in the world--the soothing coo of a mourning dove.
The quarrelsome hummingbirds fight over a spot at my feeder, when there is plenty of room for all of them. In a few hours, I'll be forced to refill their feeder, but right now, I can sit and enjoy their aerial antics.
Down at the pond, the stillness of the water is broken by an occasional ripple as the catfish begin to gather, anticipating the rattle of my son's automatic feeder.
I can see the pink blooms of the few remaining surprise lilies that have survived the ravages of time. My husband and I must have transplanted them 30 years ago from his parents' farm at Dexter.
My border collie, recuperating from the bite of a copperhead (nasty snake!) lies dozing at the edge of the porch.
My son's gray and white cat, a refugee banished to the farm for digging in a neighbor's flower bed, sits on the deck, idling her time away until dinner.
I watch the ripple of fish in the pond and feel the gentle breeze on the back of my neck.
A gray squirrel begins to chatter at me from an oak tree, impatient for me to go inside, so she can eat sunflower seeds at the feeder.
Could life be any more peaceful, here in the remote wilds of Crowley's Ridge in the forgotten rural community of Tillman, Missouri?
Across the globe, Libya battles an Ebola outbreak that threatens to spread around the world, and Israel shells Gaza. The Taliban seems determined to take over Iraq, making all our sacrifices of American lives another vain attempt to bring peace in the world.
How can such things be?
We are very fortunate to live in America. I pray every day for an end to the hate and violence which threatens to destroy those countries we see on the news.
Like hummingbirds who are unwilling to share a feeder, mankind is often unwilling to leave his feelings of hatred behind, even to save his own children from the ravages of war.
Pray for Peace!
