New cat sparks territorial conflict in DeJournett household
Life in the peaceful DeJournett household, nestled in the secluded hills near Tilman, Mo. took a violent turn this year with the sudden introduction of a rival cat known to his owner as "Ripley."
The muscular young feline first took possession of the upstairs region of the dwelling, confining his operations to three bedrooms and half of the adjoining stairs, where he sat and silently glared at the long-time resident of the dwelling, a midnight black cat named "Tybalt." (appropriately named after the dark villain of "Romeo and Juliet.")
However, hostilities between the two rival felines escalated, when the upstairs cat decided to come downstairs, encroaching on territories formerly occupied without challenge by his Shakespearian nemesis.
Minor skirmishes ensued over positions on the living room carpet but soon spread to warmer regions, such as the ottoman in front of the fireplace and the blue electric blanket on the sofa.
Attempts were made to resolve the fireplace issue by bringing in a second ottoman, but the opposing forces were not pleased by the proximity of the two sites. Ongoing turmoil took the form of snarky meows and occasional swipes of a paw. The original ottoman continued to be the favored comfort zone.
Sources report that there are times when the deployment of the treat bag is the only move that will resolve the ongoing hostilities.
Of particular interest to both combatants is the armrest position beside Ripley's favorite human occupant of the household.
An uneasy truce will fall over the battleground, as one cat takes possession of the high ground on the back of the chair, while the other cat settles into position on the arm of the chair.
Thus, the ongoing turmoil is stabilized for a period of an hour or so, as both hostile parties take a much-needed nap.
"It's really too bad that they can't get along," said favored human Kristin DeJournett. "They could have so much fun together, if they would forget their hostilities. Both of them have recently lost fellow feline companions and could be like brothers to each other."
Only time will tell if these sleek creatures can overcome their petty jealousies and become fast friends.
