Dragonfly Days
Oh, to be in Missouri on a cool August morning!
I have to admit that I love these late summer days. I open the windows to catch a pleasantly warm breeze. The gentle buzz of the cicadas makes me drowsy, and there's no rush, so if I choose to doze off into a nap, it's okay. My stomach is full of homemade Mennonite apple cinnamon rolls.
This time of year, I love to watch the gold-winged dragonflies, as their wings shimmer in the sunlight. I could sit on my front porch and watch them for hours, as they glitter over the fields down the hillside by my old goat houses. I feel myself unwind from the urgent issues of the week, listening to the bamboo wind chimes and watching my dogs stretched out in the sunshine.
Soon enough, it'll be wintertime again. I'll have to look under the tarps and count my firewood, stacked up between the trees. It usually takes five ranks to get me through the winter.
I'll have to get out the wire brush and the paint to repair some window frames before the winter rains rot out the wood, and I should put another coat of stain on the porch and deck.
The sun has finally gotten the best of the tomato plants, so we've harvested the green tomatoes to fry up for supper tonight.
The temperature will probably reach 88 degrees this afternoon, not bad at all...
Life is good.... Enjoy the last drops of summer wine...
