A right to die?
Posted Monday, March 31, at 12:26 PM
Reading through headlines today, I saw where a German conservative politician has created a machine that terminally ill patients may use to inject themselves with sodium chloride, the drug used in lethal injections in the justice system.
For quite a few years, the question of whether or not a terminally ill person has a right to decide whether they wish to suffer or die immediately has been a contentious one. On one hand, suicide is the ultimate sin, is it not? On the other, if someone has the right to say whether or not a pet can be euthanized or whether or not to pull life support on a loved one, then do they not also have a say in whether they choose to suffer or not? I'm not quite sure where I stand on this. For myself, I would never do it. Suicide is just not an option for me because of my religious beliefs. But do we have the authority to tell other people, who are counseled as to the extent of what they are doing to themselves, that they can't because religiously we don't approve? While I would want to save someone else, I don't really think that gives me the right to tell them to suffer. If a person is in their right mind and no longer wishes to live, who are we to say no? What are your thoughts?
What's YOUR story? A year or so ago, I ran a series of stories entitled, "What's Your Story," where I focused on the unusual habits or hobbies of residents from across Stoddard County. I would like to start that series up again and am looking for some volunteers who have an unusual or somewhat odd hobby, habit or JOB who would be willing to have a story done on them. You can either post on this blog or contact me via e-mail at schampion@dailystatesman.com to sign up! Thanks!...
Flooding first hand Well, folks. I can now say that I have experienced a flood and let me tell you, I won't ever view the word "flooding" the same way. As many of you know, I live in Poplar Bluff. Actually, I live on Highway 53 outside of Poplar Bluff going toward Qulin, about a mile from the Black River...
That girl is crazy! I'm sure that on Monday night, some of you watched one of the most uncomfortable shows that I think has ever aired on television. Of course I'm talking about the Moment of Truth, the Fox television show in which contestants are hooked up to polygraphs and can be eliminated if a lie is detected. According to the show's Web site, contestants "answer 21 increasingly personal questions honestly, as determined by a polygraph, and win up to $500,000."...
What is it about Nader? I heard yesterday that Ralph Nader has decided to throw his towel into the 2008 presidential race. I have to admit, I have never been a fan of politics. I try to pay as little attention to the political arena as I can. I know that Ralph Nader has run before, but I couldn't tell you much more about him...
Moving on … Well, dear readers, the weekend is upon us and it's looking like the weather will be okay, if not great. I'm curious as to what people locally are thinking of the race between Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama. Who do you think the ultimate victor will be? I'm not entirely sure, but I'm leaning toward Obama...
The Rose Parade … Valentine's Day style This may seem like a silly blog topic after so long of not posting, but with it being Valentine's Day, this subject has been on my mind all day. Of course, there has been delivery after delivery of flowers brought into our office. My own sweet, loving husband of almost 10 years sent me a dozen beautiful roses that I adore...
A hard "Pill" to swallow Let's stop the madness. I have written several stories in the past few weeks involving the high rise in prescription drug abuse. I don't mean to harp on the subject, but I want everyone to realize what a dire situation this is. When more people are dying from abusing prescription drugs than any other illegal substance in our area, we should be worried. ...
Talk about catching a tiger by the tail! Talk about catching a tiger by the tail! A 350-pound female Siberian tiger by the name of Tatiana escaped her pen at the San Francisco Zoo Christmas Day and started a rampage that left one 17-year-old dead and two other teens hospitalized with serious injuries before being shot to death by four police officers...
And to all a good night! In a world where murder, rape, drug use and generally horrid news is the norm, I want everyone to remember the reason for this holiday season. Go home and hug your families, tell them how much you love them and cherish every moment you are given with them...
