I apologize, fellow bloggers, for my long absence in posting a new blog. Things have been busy!
Anyway, as some of you may know, a new handgun law went into effect last week. The new law does away with the requirement that anyone purchasing a handgun get an owner permit from the local sheriff's department. You must still apply at the sheriff's department for a conceal carry permit, though, which makes me feel marginally better about this law. I am no supporter of gun control. I believe that bad guys are always going to have guns regardless of the law, and that law abiding citizens should have equal opportunity to own a gun for their own protection. I'm not sure what the reasoning behind the new law is. Maybe they wanted to cut down on the amount of work that sheriff's departments now have because of the conceal and carry law. I'm not sure. However, I'm not sure I'm entirely comfortable with this law. Shouldn't the sheriff's department be aware of how many people in their county have a handgun, for certain emergency situations? Do you think that makes any difference? You still have to have a background check, performed by the gun dealer that sells you the handgun. I'm glad that they are not restricting ownership of guns, but I'm not sure that this law will be such a good thing. What do you think? This saves the taxpayers money. Background checks are still being done when you buy the pistol.
There is no reason the Sheriff's department "needs" to know how many firearms a citizen owns. I am a gun collector (only military), eventhough I don't have rounds for half of the firearms I own, I would probably be labeled a militiamen for the amount I have. As long as you are a law abiding citizen, there is no reason the Sheriff's department should know what you have (regarding firearms) or don't have.
It doesn't matter as long as you still have to do a background check.
There was probably no advantage to law enforcement having to sign off on handgun purchases. A law enforcement officer must approach every situation as if the contact is in possession of a weapon anyway. I doubt if they could call an automated system to see if the contact has purchased a hand gun.
It was probably a waste of the Sheriff Departments time.
