The idiocy of the human race

I am now truly amazed.

As I was browsing through headlines today, I saw a story where a deputy sheriff in Grand Junction, Colorado, was punched in the stomach by an eighth-grader.

The sheriff's department asked prosecutors to file a charge of second-degree assault on a peace officer.

The deputy, Matt McChesney, said in a written report he and the boy passed each other in a hallway when the boy stopped, drew back his fist and punched him below his body armor.

The blow hurt, the deputy said.

"This was not an accidental bump in the hallway," McChesney's report said. "This deliberate punch was delivered with considerable force which knocked the breath out of my lungs."

Then, as I was basking in the amazed wonder of a grown man pressing charges on an eighth grader for assault over a little punch, our publisher -- Bud Hunt -- stopped and told me a story of a firefighter suing a toddler's family.

So, I looked the story up. 'Lo and behold, a firefighter in Florida is suing the family of a one-year-old boy who fell into a pool and drowned. The boy was eventually revived after family members and emergency responders fished him from the family pool.

However, this 12-year veteran of the force slipped on a puddle of water the family "left on the floor," causing her to break her knee and miss two months of work.

The child has severe brain damage and is no longer able to walk, talk or swallow. But, this firefighter is looking at "persistent knee pain and will likely develop arthritis." And the family did just leave a puddle of water around, they surely should have been more concerned about that than the dying child in their arms.

"It's a situation where the Cosmillos have caused these problems, brought them on themselves, then tried to play the victim," the firefighter's attorney is quoted as saying about the family of the child.

Okay. Give me a minue to compose my thoughts.

ARE YOU KIDDING ME?

Grow up people. Does stupidity in this day and age know no bounds? What is it going to take to wake people up to the complete idiocy of their actions? Man, oh, man.

What are your thoughts?

Idiocy?!?! That word doesn't even begin to cover this! Who in their right mind would be thinking of cleaning up a puddle of water...most likely brought in by the fireman...when their one year old child is DYING?!?!? Give me a BREAK! The world today lacks more and more compassion at every turn...and it's sad! This is the job this fireman has chosen to do for the last 12 years...so apparently they are just sick of it, and wanted an excuse to get out of it...if so...CHANGE CAREERS! Don't go looking for the easy way out like all these other lazy people do who think they can prosper off someone else's bad luck. I can't believe it, it sickens me...and I honestly wish things could go back to the way they used to be!

The Bible teaches us to freely forgive others as we have been forgiven. Even if you are an atheist,it is just really a horrible thing for a first responder to do to a grieving family. Aren't they covered under workmen's comp or something in this case?

If you do believe in God,wouldn't this be a horrible scene to be replayed on the day of judgement?

Even if the lawyer talked them into filing,I hope they are filled with real shame for stressing this poor family out more!

Well, the second incident is just stupid, but as for the first one - Is nobody concerned over what the eighth-grader was allowed to do to the policeman? I don't know if charges are the answer, but I am continually appalled by the violent behavior which adults will tolerate from children.

Is this a "boys will be boys" attitude?

Will you be as tolerant of the child when he grows up to be a violent adult?

You know there is probably a lot more to both these stories than what is being told by the media. There may be some logical explanation for both of these incidents which may render them less than news worthy incidents.

I.B., leave it to you to be logical and rational! You're right - So many of these stories end up being half-truths. The public gets all worked up over something, and it turns out to be not what it seems at first glimpse.

I'd say that someone who doesn't use a spell checker should be careful about who they call an idiot.

Jabelson! You're back!!! Yipee! Now things will get interesting!

Oh, my...I went back over everyone's comments to see if it was I (must use good grammar if Jabelson is watching!) who misspelled something!

I have totally missed the allusion! Must be getting senile in my old age, as I can't find the misspelled word!!

I didn't even know that we HAD spell check on these blogs....!!!

Goat Lady, I'm with you on this. If an eigth grader were walking down the hallway in a school which had to have ARMORED POLICE GUARDS, and was stupid enough to PUNCH one, I would say in addition to being charged with assault, the student should be immediately expelled. Anyone with me on this?

Oh my, I'm guilty...sorry jabelson. I got so riled up I just rambled on...that's "eighth"

"I'd say that someone who doesn't use a spell checker should be careful about who they call an idiot.

And I would assume by this comment that YOU walk on water???

For someone who has put such literate, intelligent comments on these blogs in the past, Jabelson, I find you puzzlingly inarticulate at the moment! Why do you keep posting the same comment? C'mon, guy!

Are you still in Europe?

There are many people who are intelligent and successful but are not perfect spellers. That is why they hire secretaries.

Back to the issue, the child should have been expelled for the mandatory number of days. Perhaps he wasn't and the lawsuit is the officer's way of trying to get the kid punished. Or, perhaps the officer was trying to call attention to the kid's actions to get the kid some mental help before it's too late - if a kid will punch a law enforcement officer, chances are he will (or has) punched others. Or maybe the office is just a jerk. I doubt we know the whole story.

However, punching anyone is not acceptable. Lack of respect for the law and those who enforce it is not acceptable. Both will lead a young person down the road to ruin. Both are bad habits that need to be nipped in the bud (yea Barney Fife).

Yeah, where is Barney Fife when ya need him??

-- Posted by goat lady on Tue, Oct 23, 2007, at 7:48 AM

I am absolutely sure there is a lot more to this story than is being told. Let's hear the boys side of the story before we decide he is a hardened criminal bound for San Quentin. If you can remember as I do when you were in the eighth grade you will remember that you done some very ill advised and misunderstood things.

-- Posted by I.B. Le Truth on Tue, Oct 23, 2007, at 9:45 PM

Well, maybe some of you guys did, but I was pretty tame back in those days.

-- Posted by goat lady on Sun, Oct 28, 2007, at 7:42 PM

I was too, but sometimes I said or did something that other people misunderstood. I never hit a police officer in the stomach, but it sounds like something that I might have made a mistake in doing if I thought the officer was my friend and I was joking with him and I can see where I could have accidentally hit him harder than I intended to.

With some experience in the law enforcement field I can tell you that some of these guys have a stiff collar and really shouldn't be working around young pre-adults. Not that they are bad officers, it's just not what they should be doing.

I say that the boy hitting the cop needs his little butt torn up. You want to talk about idiocy, let's look at the current situation involving child rearing and punishment. As a kid I was whipped with switches when I was bad and deservedly so. These whippings did not make me into some kind of child abuser. Too many people now adays know what punishment is, because they were punished as a child, but do not enforce it. There is talk of making a good old fashioned butt whipping illegal in a state up north or maybe several states considering this. This is true idiocy in it's purest form. Our children are going to get continually more out of control when you have authorities or authorative figures telling them mommy and daddy cannot whip you. I love my children with all my heart that is exactly why I WOULD whip the butts if and when needed. People are blaming tv NO it's not tv, it's IDIOCY. Children need to know that when they do wrong there is a hefty price to pay for it. An 8th grader knows the difference between right and wrong, I know because I have 2 girls in the 8th grade myself. Time outs? Where the hell was that when I was a kid? Now son you sit there and think about what you did. Oh yeah I'm thinking about it. Sheesh......this world and the next generation is going to have hell to pay if we keep letting our children control our lives.

Now for the Florida incident. Ha, I know it's not funny, but I lived in Florida for 2 years and I really believe that this woman thinks she is doing the right thing. I think the sun bakes their brains in Florida because IDIOCY runs rampant there like a plague with no cure. Hopefully she has some family members and neighbors that have a little common sense and shun her for her ignorant display of greed. I hope she believes in God and repents for her greedy transgressions.
