Man or woman … who cares?

Two city councilman candidates in Georgia who lost an election to a "transgender candidate" have now filed a suit with the county's superior court to declare the election null and void.
The two claim that the candidate who won "mislead" voters into believing she was a woman, even though she goes by the name Michelle Mickey Bruce. Frankly, I think these two just have sour grapes over losing and now want to rake the winner through the coals. Did I mention that the candidate who won was also an incumbent candidate? That means that Ms./Mr. Bruce already held the seat before the election. Should these two be allowed to file such a lawsuit? Personally, I don't think so. I don't think it really matters whether the candidate who was elected is man, woman or a combination of both. That's a private matter and the voters seemed to think that the incument candidate was doing a good job and elected her/him on that basis. Shame on those two. They are sore losers and need to get a reality check. What are your thoughts on the matter? Would it really matter to you if you elected a woman candidate just to find out that underneath the clothing it was really a man? I just don't see the big deal! I agree that a person's gender is not relevant in an election. Frankly, I'd rather vote for RuPaul than Ron Paul.
I put gender in the same category as a person's sexual preference: it's only relevant if you want to have sex with that person. If you don't, then it isn't relevant. Not only do I not want people to go by "don't ask, don't tell" - I flat don't want to know.
Well said Wolfgang! It used to be that doctors put transgender issues with homosexuality,as a "mental disease".
Of course,now we understand that just as you stated a hormonal problem occurred in utero that causes one sex brain in an opposite sex body.
It is a VERY private medical issue,and nobody's business,they have already suffered enough.
Thank you for saying what needed to be said. As a transsexual man I'd like to clarify some things. First, transsexualism is an intersex condition believed to be caused by hormone imbalances in the womb during fetal development, specifically affecting sex differentiation in the brain.In other words, Ms. Bruce has always had a female brain.
Second, I get tired of people equating sex reassignment with genital surgery, as though the genitals are the only body part that separates male from female. Sexual dimorphism occurs throughout the entire body, and is largely caused by the actions of the sex hormones, estrogen and testosterone, at key developmental phases.
Medical sex reassignment treatment begins with the introduction of cross-sex hormones which induce a second puberty and cause changes, some minor and some major, to every organ and system in the body, from the bone marrow to the surface of the skin. Surgery follows if desired by the individual, who must weigh the issues of finances (insurance companies generally don't cover our transition expenses), physical health, personal circumstances, surgical risks, etc.
From a purely technical biological standpoint, a transsexual starts out intersexed and ends up merely in a different form of intersexed. From a social and (increasingly) legal standpoint, in a society that divides everyone into a binary gendered system, external presentation determines a person's gender.
Ms. Bruce is a transsexual woman, but her transsexual status is part of her private medical history. She had, (or *should* have had), no obligation to reveal it. All that matters is that she is a woman.
The fact that anyone could even bring a suit like this and be taken seriously by anyone in 2007 is disgusting. Shame on us all.
