Edith Christine Batson, the daughter of the late Charles Acie and Cecil Mae Pettus Phares, was born in St. Francis on June 4, 1920, and died Tuesday, April 1, 2003, in West Plains at the age of 82. Mrs. Batson had lived in West Plains since 1997. She was a former resident of Granite City, Ill., and Lawton, Okla. She was a retired school cook for Illinois School District #9 and was a soldier of the Salvation Army. On July 28, 1945, she was married to George Shisko. He preceded her in death on Nov. 10, 1960. On Feb. 22, 1973, she was married to John H. Batson in Granite City, Ill. He preceded her in death on Feb. 5, 1998. Mrs. Batson is survived by three daughters, Mary Margaret Smith, Naomi Greenlee and Ruth Mitchell, all of West Plains; two sons, John David Batson of Waukesha, Wis., and Larry Batson of Viburnum; two brothers, Marvin Phares of Desloge and Robert Ray Phares of Florida; one sister, Hilda Stricklin of Desloge; 13 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by one son, Gregory Phillip Shisko on July 24, 1993; one sister, Charlene Smart; and one brother, Leroy Phares. Visitation will be held at 11 a.m. until service time Saturday, April 5, 2003, at the Watkins & Sons Funeral Home in Dexter. Graveside funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, April 5, 2003, in the Hagy Cemetery with retired Major Herb Dahl of West Plains officiating. Interment will follow in the Hagy Cemetery in Dexter. Watkins & Sons Funeral Service of Dexter is in charge of all arrangements.
