Thomas W. Atkins, son of Nell and Andrew Atkins, was born in Kennett on June 13, 1937, and died Dec. 27, 2002, at his home in Ormond Beach, Fla., at the age of 65. He is survived by his wife, Dottie Keay Atkins, Ormond Beach, Fla., and one brother, John Paul Atkins of Sarasota, Fla. He was a member of First Baptist Church, Daytona Beach, Fla., and also leaves many friends from Dexter School System and Southeast Missouri State University. His career included Naval Aviation as a Navigator, contributed to the Gemini and Apollo Space program while employed by NASA, a licensed pilot who also built and flew ultralight aircraft, owned and operated Stovall's Department Store until his retirement. A memorial service is planned for 2:00 p.m. Monday, Jan. 13, 2003, at First Baptist Church of Dexter. Memorial donations may be made to "Hospice of Memorial Hospital, Ormond Beach, 785 West Granada Blvd., Suite 5, Ormond Beach, Fla. 32174".
