Harley E. Vails, Sr., the son of the late William E. and Virgie A. Mounce Vails, was born in Holcomb on May 7, 1915, and died at the Cypress Point Health Care in Dexter on Oct. 17, 2002, at the age of 87. Mr. Vails had lived in Essex for many years where he farmed. He lived in Dexter for the past 16 years. Mr. Vails loved to fish and hunt. He attended the Vinson General Baptist church near Essex. On Feb. 24, 1940, he was married to Anna Laura Cox in Catron. Surviving are his wife Anna Vails of Dexter; three sons, Darrell Vails of Jackson, Tenn., Junior Vails of Dexter, and Michael Vails of Essex; five daughters, Peggy Rehkop of St. Charles, Shirley Blair of Columbia, B.J. Vails of Cape Girardeau, Kimberly Neppl of Naperville, Ill., and Sheila Vails of Dexter; four brothers, George Vails of Puxico, Charles Vails of Dexter, Frank Vails of Campbell, and Roy Vails of Ocala, Fla.; five sisters, Armada Valentine and Gerline Gregory, both of Dexter, Ulah Owens of Bernie, Lola Thomas of Stuarts Draft, Va., and Nadine Donalson of Rockford, Ill.; 11 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Maxine Lester and Joyce Arnold. Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. today, Friday, Oct. 18, 2002, at the Watkins & Sons Funeral Home in Dexter. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 19, 2002, in the Watkins & Sons Chapel in Dexter with Rev. Doyle Corlew of Dexter officiating. Interment will follow in the Dexter Cemetery with Watkins & Sons Funeral Service of Dexter in charge of arrangements.
