J.W. Smothers

James Wesley ?J.W.? Smothers, son of the late Evert Smothers and Essie Lee Pierce Smothers, was born on July 11, 1923, in Campbell and died Saturday, Sept. 28, 2002, at St. Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau at the age of 79. Mr. Smothers was married to Glodean Stevens on Feb. 23, 1943, at New Madrid, and she survives of the home. Mr. Smothers was affiliated with the First General Baptist Church of Campbell. He was a member of Four Mile Masonic Lodge #212, Campbell O.E.S. Chapter #92, the Scottish Rites, and Shriners. He was also a retired farmer. Other survivors include one son, Donald Smothers, of Malden; two daughters, Ginger Kay Mauldin of Jefferson City, and Joan Marie Abernathy of Campbell; three brothers, Everett Smothers of Forsyth, Robert Lee Smothers of Kennett, and Ernest Smothers of Troy; one sister, Mary Bennett of Marmaduke, Ark.; ten grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by one daughter, Janet Dean; two brothers, Buford and Loran Smothers; and three sisters, Dona Smothers, Mattie Shanda and Opal Lewis. Visitation was held at 6:00 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 29, 2002, with a Masonic service at 7:30 p.m. that evening. Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, Sept. 30, 2002, at Bradshaw Chapel in Malden with Rev. Jim Black officiating. Interment followed at Elder Cemetery in Campbell with military rites.
