J. Loyd Carter, son of the late Jessie Carter and Irene Walker Carter, was born on Jan. 17, 1907, at Ellsinore and died in the Missouri Southern Health Care at Dexter on Aug. 16, 2002, at the age of 95. Mr. Carter was a member of the First Baptist Church of Bernie, a farmer, and a resident of Bernie. He was united in marriage to Edith Cates on April 17, 1927, at Ellsinore, and she survives of the home in Bernie. Other survivors include two sons, Ivan Willis Carter of Bonne Terre, Mo., and Sherman Loyd Carter of Bernie; three daughters, Verna Roberts of Wappapello, Leatha McElvoy of Springfield, Mo., and Brenda Collins of Lakeland, Fla.; one brother, Tony Carter of St. Clair; one sister, Bertha Wise of St. Louis; 22 grandchildren; and over 100 great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren and great-great-great-grandchildren. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by one son, Freeman Luke Carter, one daughter, Noami Dockins, seven brothers, three sisters, and one grandson. Visitation was held from 5:00 - 8:00 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 18, 2002, at the Rainey-Mathis Funeral Home in Bernie. Funeral services were conducted at 1:00 p.m. Monday, Aug. 19, 2002, in the Rainey-Mathis Funeral Chapel with Rev. John Knapp officiating. Interment followed in the Bernie Cemetery.
