Bessie Naomi Summers, daughter of the late Walter Alexander Summers and Allie Davenport Summers, was born at Dexter on July 26, 1927, and died in the University of Chicago (Ill.) Hospital on Thursday, May 30, 2002, at the age of 74. Formerly of Dexter, she was a homemaker and resided in Dowagiac, Mich. Survivors include two sons, John Chappel of Dowagiac, Mich., and Michael Chappel of Kalamazoo, Mich.; two daughters, Deborah Smith and Rebecca Michael, both of Dowagiac; two sisters, Wilma Hyslop and Alfred Reed, both of Dexter; nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Carmen Summers and Farrell Summers; and three sisters, Lottie Riley, Dorothy Sneed and Jewell Summers. Graveside services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Monday, June 3, 2002 at the Dexter Cemetery with Rev. Phil Warren officiating. Rainey-Mathis Funeral Home of Dexter is in charge of arrangements.
