Gladys Gowan

Gladys E. (Smith) Gowan of Glen Carbon, Ill., daughter of John and Pearl May Smith, was born March 15, 1911 in Rector, Ark. and died Sunday, May 19, 2002 at Eden Village, Glen Carbon, Ill., at the age of 91. Mrs. Gowan was a homemaker, an excellent self-taught pianist and very active in Tower View Baptist Church. In 1932 she was united in marriage to Albert Stanley Gowan who preceded her in death. Survivors include two sons, Albert J. Gowan of Cambridge, Mass. and James Lee Gowan of Ponca City, Okla..; three brothers, George Smith of Williamson, Ill., Dwight Smith and Marvin Smith, both of Dexter; five sisters, Estella Norman of Evansville, Ill., Cleetis Bardsley of Glen Carbon, Ill., Eva Barrow of Granite City, Ill., Moneeta Parks of Caseyville, Ill. and Lawanda Allie of Michigan City, Ind.; seven grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. Besides her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by one half-brother, Herbert Smith and one half-sister, Myrtle Bucy. Visitation was held at the Kurrus Funeral Home in Belleville, Ill. from 11 a.m. - 1 p.m., Monday, May 20. Funeral services were then conducted at 1 p.m. in the Kurrus Funeral Chapel with Rev. Wayne Shockley and Rev. David Denton officiating. Interment followed at the Lakeview Memorial Gardens in Fairview Heights, Ill. with Kurrus Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. Memorials may be made to Eden Village in Glen Carbon, Ill.
