Herman Matthews of Malden, the son of Herman and Lettie Shumonie Matthews, was born Feb. 1, 1908 in Red Bud, Ill. and died Wednesday, May 8, 2002 at the Malden Nursing Center in Malden, at the age of 94. On Aug. 18, 1930 he was united in marriage to Ethel Mae Strong at Malden and she preceded him in death on Jan. 21, 1998. Mr. Matthews was of the Baptist faith. He is survived by one son, Leo Matthews of Herculanenum, Mo.; by two daughters, Daisy Tilley of Mammoth Springs, Ark. and Linda White of Malden; by one brother, Ed McCarthy of Winston, Ore.; by one sister, Hattie Cullum of Parma; by eight grandchildren; by 10 great-grandchildren; and by one great-great-grandchild. Besides his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by two sons, Robert Matthews and Ernie Matthews; by one sister, Zelma Ritcheson; and by two brothers, Goldman McCarthy and Roosevelt McCarthy. Visitation will be held at the Bradshaw Funeral Home in Malden on Friday, May 10 after 6 p.m. Funeral services will be conducted on Saturday, May 11 at 11 a.m. in the Bradshaw Chapel with Rev. Tim Matthews and Mr. Randy Moore officiating. Interment will follow at the Memorial Park Cemetery in Malden with Bradshaw Funeral Home of Malden in charge of arrangements.
