Celeste Menees

Celeste Sutter Menees, the daughter of the late Alfred and Addie Rucker Sutter, was born near Puxico on Jan. 10, 1902 and died at the St. Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau on May 7, 2002, at the age of 100. Mrs. Menees had lived near and in Puxico all her life until June 1, 1987, when she moved to Chateau Girardeau in Cape Girardeau. She attended the Rock Hill and Puxico Schools. During World War I she was bookkeeper at the Citizens State Bank in Puxico. The Sutter family moved to Puxico in February of 1923 and she entered the family business, The Puxico Mercantile Co., with her father in 1935 and then she sold the store to her brother, Alton Sutter in 1965. Mrs. Menees was city clerk for the City of Puxico for 25 years, was a member of the United Methodist Church in Puxico for 60 years, where she served as treasurer, Sunday school teacher, as well as many other offices, was a 50 year member of Puxico Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star, a charter member of the Puxico Business and Professional Women's Club and past member of the White Shrine in Poplar Bluff. She transferred her membership to the Centinary United Methodist Church in Cape Girardeau when she moved. On Sept. 9, 1938 she was united in marriage to Ogle O. Menees and he preceded her in death on May 5, 1983. Survivors include one brother, Alton F. Sutter of Cape Girardeau. Besides her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by one sister, Isa Kleeman on Dec. 13, 1991. Visitation will be held Thursday, May 9, after 6 p.m. at the Watkins & Sons Funeral Home in Puxico. Eastern Star service will be at 7 p.m. Funeral services will be conducted in the Watkins & Sons Funeral Chapel at 10:30 a.m., Friday, May 10 with Rev. James A. Sanderson of Cape Girardeau officiating and Rev. Wiley McGhee of Puxico assisting. Interment will follow at the Puxico Cemetery with Watkins & Sons Funeral Service of Puxico in charge of arrangements.
