Noah Gaines

Noah O. Gaines, son of the late James Francis Gaines and Lucinda Book Gaines, was born on June 2, 1912 in Clay County, Ark. and died at his resident in Bernie on March 29, 2002, at the age of 89. Mr. Gaines was a member of the First Assembly of God Church in Bernie, a school bus driver for the Bernie Public Schools for 30 years and was caretaker of the Bernie Cemetery for 18 years. He was united in marriage to Virgie Whitehead on Nov. 11, 1933 and she preceded him in death on Aug. 22, 1976. He then married Carma Underhill on Jan. 6, 1979 and she preceded him in death on May 1, 1993. He is survived by two sons, Colin G. Gaines of St. Louis and John E. Gaines of Dexter; by one daughter, June Dennis of Springfield; by 11 grandchildren; and by 12 great-grandchildren. Besides his parents and wives, he was preceded in death by one brother, George N. Gaines; by three sisters, Zana Marie Craft, Charity B. Arnold and Susie Henderson. Visitation was held at the Rainey-Mathis Funeral Home in Bernie from 5 - 8 p.m., Sunday, March 31. Funeral services were conducted at 10 a.m., Monday, April 1 in the Rainey-Mathis Funeral Chapel with Rev. Scott Jones officiating. Interment followed in the Bernie Cemetery with Rainey-Mathis Funeral Home of Bernie in charge of arrangements.
