Velma Cannon

Velma Lee Cannon, daughter of the late John C. and Nancy Boyt Snider, was born Feb. 4, 1906 at Frisco and died at Missouri Southern Healthcare in Dexter on Saturday, May 3, 2003 at the age of 97. Mrs. Cannon was a member of the Church of the Brethren at Frisco, a former book keeper for the J.P. Ross Cotton Company of Essex, a member of the Dexter Chapter Order of the Eastern Star #311 and a resident of Dexter. She was married to Norman Arvell Cannon on Sept. 15, 1923 at Frisco. Mr. Cannon preceded her in death on January 31, 1969. Survivors include one son, Loy Cannon of Long Beach, Calif.; five daughters, Louella Layton, Marcella Corlies, Norma Gibbons, Helen Lane Norman, all of Dexter and Jo Ann Smith of Dallas, Texas; twelve grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and several great-great-grandchildren. Besides her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by five brothers, Tommy Snider, Asa Snider, Paul Snider, Marion "Babe" Snider and Charlie Snider; and three sisters, Lily Wilson, Pearl Swinger and Mary Helen Myers. Visitation was held Monday, May 5, 2003 from 5 - 8 p.m. at the Rainey-Mathis Funeral Home in Dexter. Funeral services were held Tuesday, May 6, 2003 at 10 a.m. in the Rainey-Mathis Funeral Chapel with Rev. Ramie Gass officiating. Interment followed in the Essex Cemetery.
