D.L. Griffin

D.L. Griffin, the son of the late James and Lula Sauls Griffin, was born in Eldorado, Ill., on Oct. 12, 1922, and died Friday, April 11, 2003, at the Missouri Delta Medical Center in Sikeston at the age of 80. Mr. Griffin had lived in California for several years and moved to Essex in 1982. He was a heavy equipment operator and had worked out of the Operating Engineers Local #3. He was a member of the Olive Branch General Baptist Church and had served as a deacon for ten years. He had also served as deacon at the Harmony General Baptist Church in San Rafael, California, for 12 years. In 1941, he was married to Essie Prince in Gray Ridge. He is survived by his wife, Essie Griffin of Essex; two sons, Jim Griffin of Sacramento, Calif. and Keith Griffin of Springfield; four grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; one half-brother, John Owens of Eldorado, Ill. He was preceded in death by one son, Wayne Griffin, on Feb. 20, 2000, and one brother, Bertis Griffin, on Jan. 11, 1989. Visitation was held from 5-8 p.m. Sunday, April 13, 2003, at the Watkins & Sons Funeral Home in Dexter. Funeral service was conducted at 2 p.m. Monday, April 14, 2003, in the Watkins & sons Chapel in Dexter with the Rev. Doyle Corlew of Dexter officiating. Interment followed in the Essex Cemetery with Watkins & Sons Funeral Service of Dexter in charge of all arrangements.
