Lela Lawson Layton, the daughter of the late James and Bertha Deffindal Basinger, was born in Canalou on June 5, 1924 and died at the National Healthcare in Kennett on Feb. 24, 2002, at the age of 77. She was former resident of Canalou, but had resided in Kennett the past three years. Surviving are two sons, William R. Lawson of St. Louis and Harold Lee Lawson of Doniphan; three daughters, Lavada Pipkin of Rector, Ark., Esther Stuart of Canalou, and Linda Ellison of Crawford, Ga.; 11 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; one brother, Hobart Basinger of Lansing, Mich.; and one sister, Bertha Wren of Eldorado, Ill. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, Feb. 27 from 5 - 8 p.m. at the Watkins & Sons Funeral Home in Dexter. Funeral services will be conducted on Thursday, Feb. 28 at 1 p.m. in the Watkins & Sons Funeral Chapel with Rev. Terry Miller of St. Louis officiating. Interment will follow in the Garden of Memories Cemetery in Sikeston with Watkins & Sons Funeral Service of Dexer in charge of arrangements.
