Avery Hollis, 81, of Mt. Morris was born Nov. 20, 1920 in Bernie, Mo., the son of Mr. and Mrs. Alexander and Lula (Goforth) Hollis and died on Monday, Jan. 21, 2002 at Genesys Regional Medical Center. He was united in marriage to Georgia Ellen Stevens on Feb. 10, 1947 in Dexter, Mo. They shared 54 years together. Mr. Hollis retired Jan. 1, 1980 as an inspector and engineering technician with the Michigan Department of Transportation with 25 years service. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the United States Army Air Force and was a member of the United Brethren Church of Mt. Morris and the American Legion. Avery loved to fish, play cards on Saturday with his Highland buddies and was very devoted to his grandchildren. Surviving are his wife, Georgia; two daughters, Linda and husband, Ted Hammon, and Joyce Hollis; three grandchildren, Jason, Jennifer and Jessica Hammon; two great-grandchildren, River and Laken Hammon; two sisters, Agnes Russell and Dorothy and husband, Bob Bailey; one brother, Glen Hollis of Bloomfield; and numerous nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins. Funeral services were conducted at 1 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 24, 2002 at the Miles Martin Funeral Home. Family was present at the funeral home to receive friends on Tuesday, Jan. 22 from 6 - 9 p.m., Wednesday, Jan. 23 from 3 - 9 p.m. and Thursday, Jan. 24 from 10 a.m. until the time of service at 1 p.m. with Rev. Erv Saultman officiating and burial in Davision Cemetery. Those desiring, may consider memorial contribution directed towards the Burton Veterans Memorial Fund. PAID
