Johnnie Lee "Big John" Oliver, the son of Leora Brewington Oliver and the late Herbert Cecil Oliver, was born in Canalou on May 24, 1944 and died at the Missouri Southern Healthcare Facility in Dexter on Dec. 21, 2001, at the age of 57. Mr. Oliver had lived in Bloomfield since 1977. He was a member of the Mt. Zion-Walker General Baptist Church near Bloomfield, a member of the Dexter Elks Lodge and a veteran of the United States Army, serving in Korea. On Oct. 3, 1970 he was united in marriage to Karen Shockley in Canalou, she survives of the home. Besides his wife he is survived by one daughter, Juliana Oliver of Bloomfield; by his mother, Leora Oliver of Essex; and by one sister, Cloetta (Corky) Razer of Essex. Besides his father, he was preceded in death by one sister, Jo Anne Bell. Visitation will be held at Watkins & Sons Funeral Home in Dexter on Wednesday, Dec. 26 from 5 - 8 p.m. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, Dec. 27 at 1 p.m. at the Mt. Zion-Walker General Baptist Church, near Bloomfield, with Rev. Bill Pennington and Rev. Bob Holland, both of Bloomfield, officiating. Interment will follow in the Matthews Cemetery in Matthews with Watkins & Sons Funeral Service of Dexter in charge of all arrangements.
