John Powell, the son of the late Enoch and Ella Helms Powell, was born near Puxico on April 8, 1907 and died at his home in Puxico on Sept. 5, 2001, at the age of 94. He had lived all his life in the Puxico area and had been a section worker for St. Louis-San Francisco (Frisco) Railroad line for 37 years. Mr. Powell was a Past Master of the Puxico Masonic Lodge, #596 A.F. & A.M. and had served several times as Worthy Patron of the Puxico Chapter #422 Order of the Eastern Star. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Puxico. On Sept. 3, 1931 he was united in marriage to Mildred Kitchen in Poplar Bluff. She preceded him in death on Oct. 28, 1994. Surviving are one daughter, Barbara Smith of Puxico; one son, Jerry Powell of Warrenton, Mo.; four grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and eight great-great grandchildren. Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by one daughter, Catherine Lorraine Powell. Visitation will be held at the Watkins & Sons Funeral Home in Puxico on Friday, Sept. 7 at 6 p.m. A Masonic service will be held at 7 p.m. Funeral services will be held on Sat., Sept. 8 at 2 p.m. in the Watkins & Sons Funeral Chapel in Puxico with Rev. Marshall Link and Rev. Wiley McGhee, both of Puxico, officiating. Interment will follow in the Puxico Cemetery with Watkins & Sons Funeral Service of Puxico in charge of arrangements.
