John Hartwell
John William Hartwell Sr., son of the late James Alexander Hartwell and Sarah Wigington Hartwell, was born at Hayti on July 31, 1911 and died in the V.A. Medical Center at Memphis, Tenn. on Aug. 30, 2001, at the age of 90. He was united in marriage to Gladys C. Crutchfield in Piggott, Ark. on July 24, 1951. To this union three sons were born. She preceded him death on Jan. 23, 1990. He was also preceded in death by four brothers and five sisters. Mr. Hartwell was a World War II Veteran of the United States Army, served as Campus Police at the St. Louis University in St. Louis until his retirement, was a member of the Four Mile Masonic Lodge of Campbell and attended the Beechwell General Baptist Church of rural Campbell. He is survived by three sons, John William Hartwell II of Florissant, James Douglas Hartwell of Ferguson, and Robert Manley Hartwell of Spanish Lake, Mo.; by 10 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and by one brother, George Hudson Hartwell of Thayer. Visitation will be at the Rainey Funeral Home in Bernie on Fri., Aug. 31 from 5-8 p.m. Funeral services will be conducted in the Rainey Funeral Chapel in Bernie on Sat., Sept. 1 at 11 a.m. with Rev. John Schlager of Campbell officiating. Interment will follow in the Bernie Cemetery at Bernie. Rainey Funeral Home in Bernie in charge of arrangements.
