Ralph E. Messmore, son of the late Frank and Lucy Waggoner Messmore, was born at Sullivan, Ill., on Nov. 8, 1917, and died at his home near Acorn Ridge on Saturday, May 24, 2003, at the age of 85. Mr. Messmore retired as a captain in the U.S. Army in 1961 after serving his country for 23 years during World War II and the Korean Conflict. After his retirement, Mr. Messmore moved to Acorn Ridge. On May 7, 1947, he was married to Beatrice Whitehead. Survivors include his wife, Beatrice Messmore of the home at Acorn Ridge; one son, Ralph Lyle Messmore of St. Louis; two daughters, Paula Messmore Arn of Kansas City and Amy Shewell of Blue Springs; one brother, John Messmore of Sibley, Ill.; four sisters, Joy Carlisle of Charleston, Ill., Bonnie Bell of Greenview, Ill., Peggy Scott of Matton, Ill., and Geraldine Standerfer of Mountain Home, Ark.; and six grandchildren. Besides his parents he was preceded in death by one brother, Jack Messmore, and two sisters, Mildred Price and Fern King. Visitation was held from 6-8 p.m. Monday, May 26, 2003, at the Chiles-Cooper Funeral Home in Bloomfield. The funeral service was held at 10 a.m. today, Tuesday, May 27, 2003, at the Chiles-Cooper Funeral Home in Bloomfield with Rev. Brad Dush officiating. Interment followed in the Bernie Cemetery with full military services at the cemetery.
