Mary Catherine Dill Owensby, 81, a resident of Mexico and formerly of East Prairie, died Tuesday, Aug. 19, 2003, at the Missouri Veterans Home in Mexico. She was born July 26, 1922, at Huntingdon, Tenn., to the late Isiah Earl and Birchard Bennett Dill. In 1941 she graduated from East Prairie High School. After graduating from high school, she attended college in Cape Girardeau and taught school in the James Bayou School near East Prairie. She joined the U.S. Navy as a wave during World War II being stationed in Washington, D.C. A former resident of Dexter, she was active in the Dexter Senior Center and a member of First Baptist Church in Dexter. On Feb. 5, 1945, she married Cline Jered Owensby at Falls Church, Va. She was preceded in death by Mr. Owensby on Oct. 25, 1992; one brother, William "Buddy" Dill; and two sisters, Corine Dick and Earlene Fugate. Survivors include two daughters, Clinetta Lewis of Montgomery City, and Deborah Ann Steuer of Atlanta, Ga.; four grandsons; and two great-grandchildren. Visitation was held after 5 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 21, 2003, at the Shelby Funeral Home in East Prairie. Funeral services were conducted at 10 a.m. Friday, Aug. 22, 2003, at the Shelby Funeral Home in East Prairie with Bro. Fred Girdwood officiating. Interment followed in the Dogwood Cemetery with Shelby Funeral Home in charge of all arrangements.
